This list has been updated in June 2014 but you are always advised to confirm costs and
services with the organisation concerned. Note that services sometimes have a waiting list
and there can be changes to how services are delivered. So please do check directly with
any agency you wish to use, this list is a guide to local services only.
We suggest you check the qualifications, supervision and the ethical principles of any
service you contact.
There are two sections, the first section ‘Counselling Organisations’ gives details of
registering bodies and organisations, that provide lists and directories you can use to find a
local counsellor or therapist. The second section gives details of organisations in Brighton
and Hove that offer lower cost, free or discounted counselling services or therapies to local
residents.

An NHS service of qualified mental health specialists and support
workers who are trained to provide short term therapeutic
interventions and talking therapies. They support people with
emotional and psychological difficulties and provide help with
employment issues and other practical or social issues for those
receiving therapy. Talking therapy and workshops on depression,
anxiety, confidence, assertiveness and stress are available. Access
is via GP referral or to self-refer contact the service directly.

Have limited-availability, free counselling for carers service. This is
provided by two local specialist agencies, the Rock Clinic and
Relate, and commissioned by the Council/NHS. Carers can access 8
sessions from either of these providers if they are caring for
someone aged 18 and up, who is a Brighton and Hove resident and
is not in residential or nursing home care. If the service is not
available at the time a carer is referred, they will be signposted to
alternative sources of counselling.
Professionals should make a referral using the online referral form or
making phone contact with the Carers Centre.

Provide a low cost, confidential, independent and accessible
counselling service for disabled people, their families, friends and
carers, with contracts of up to 24 weekly sessions.
COST: The initial assessment appointment is a free 50 minute
session with a qualified and experienced counselling
supervisor.Subsequent counselling sessions are paid for on a
donation basis, usually between £5- £20 per session, but this can be

SUSSEX REHABILITATION CENTRE COUNSELLING SERVICE

BACP registered counsellors provide students a safe, confidential
environment to discuss concerns, allowing time to reflect, discover
new options and possibilities, and learn strategies to cope with life's
stressors. Appointments can be made by phone, by email or by
visiting the local Student Services office. Appointments are available
at all sites on weekdays throughout term time, and some limited
appointments are available during vacations. They will contact about
counselling by email, telephone, letter and text message.
If you're in the School of Education, you may be able to make use of
the online e-counselling service See link for details (480k pdf). This
is an online type of therapy that takes place via an exchange of
emails.

to six, 50min sessions. Access to 1+-1 therapy is by reception
interview to discuss if counselling is appropriate for complete the

Drop-In appointments can be used for a one-off 20-30 minute
appointment with a counsellor to discuss anything that's troubling.

The Young Peoples’ Centre provides a range of services for
vulnerable young people aged 13 to 25, who have multiple needs
related to their physical, mental and sexual health. They provide
free, confidential counselling to young people aged 13 to 25 years
old in Brighton and the surrounding area.

Online Counselling Service E-motion

YPC also offer an online counselling service called E-motion. It is an
exchange of emails between client and counsellor. It’s similar to face
to face counselling except you write to your counsellor about any
issues, feelings or concerns that are on your mind.

Community Counselling Service for 13-25 year olds.

Free of charge, limited number of counselling sessions. Young
people can self refer or be referred by other services. Contact
directly on 07739 893707 or e-mail . Young people can also go to
the Youth Advice Centre (YAC) to be referred, drop in between 3pm
and 6pm Mon – Fri , 2nd Floor, Ovest House, 58 West Street,
Brighton BN1 2RA. The counselling co-ordinator will arrange an
initial appointment. All counselling sessions are by appointment only.
