Eighth International Symposium On Permafrost Engineering Xi’an, China, October 14-17, 2009 First Circular The 8th International Symposium on Permafrost Engineering is organized by the First Highway Survey and Design Institute of China (Xi'an, China), the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute (Lanzhou, China), and the Melnikov Permafrost Institute (Yakutsk, Russia). The permafrost is undergoing dramatic changes due to warming climate and steadily increasing anthropogenic activities. On the other hand, the evolution of permafrost environments substantially impacts natural ecosystems, engineering infrastructures, and land use. This Symposium will provide a forum for researchers to exchange practical experiences in construction and maintenance of engineering structures, as well as to provide a showcase for recent developments and advancements in geocryology, permafrost hydrology, ecology, and so on, and debate future directions for permafrost engineering. Sponsors Workshop Office on the Permafrost Engineering belonging to International Permafrost Association Glaciology and Geocryology branch of the Geographical Society of China Department of Science, Technology and Education, Ministry of Transport Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, China Academy Sciences (CAREERI, CAS) State Key Laboratory of Frozen Soil Engineering (SKLFSE) Melnikov Permafrost Institute of Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences First Highway Survey and Design Institute of China Co., Ltd Key Laboratory of Roadway Engineering in Cold Regions Russia Geotechnical Association (AIIS) Geological Research Institute for Construction (PNIIIS) Local Organizer Key Laboratory of Roadway Engineering in Cold Regions, First Highway Survey and Design Institute of China Co., Ltd Co-Organizers Northwest Research Institute Co., Ltd of China Railway Engineering Corporation China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Highway Survey and Design Institute of Qinghai Province Chang'an University Heilongjiang Provincial Hydraulic Research Institute Key Laboratory of Highway Construction and Maintenance Technology in Seasonally Frozen Soil Region, Ministry of Communications, Heilongjiang Transportation Research Institute Harbin Institute of Technology Xi'an China Highway Geotechnical Engineering Co., Ltd Jiangsu Sunpower Technology Co., Ltd Shaoxing University Owens Corning (China) Investment Co., Ltd Topics 1.
