The Internal Medicine Residency Program offers training in general internal medicine as
well as in the subspecialties. Each residency year is divided into 24 two week blocks.
Residents rotate through the inpatient general IM service, the inpatient IM subspecialty
services, the critical care units, and the ambulatory care center. Other rotations include
research electives, subspecialty electives, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and vacation.
PGY-1 Year
(A)Categorical Year: Each categorical intern spends between three and four months
rotating on the general medicine inpatient wards either @ JMC or @ Weiler, one to two
months on the subspecialty wards (Oncology/Pulmonary/HIV), one month in the Medical
ICU (MICU), one month in the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), one to one and a half months
on Night Float, two weeks in the ER and 2 weeks on elective.
(B)Preliminary Year: Preliminary interns have the same schedule as the categorical
interns other than one less month of inpatient general medicine wards, two additional
weeks of CCU and two additional weeks of elective.
PGY-2
Second year residents spend one month on the general medicine wards @ JMC or Weiler,
one to two months on the subspecialty services, one to two months in the JMC CCU or
the Weiler CCU, one month in the medical ICU, one to one and half months on Night
Float, two months in Ambulatory care and two and a half to three months doing elective.
Throughout the year, residents are expected to supervise and teach the interns, subinterns,
and medical students. Leadership skills are essential.
PGY-3
Third year residents spend between two and three months on the general medicine wards,
two to three months as SMR or MAR, one month in the CCU, two weeks in the MICU,
two months in Ambulatory Care, and three and half months doing electives (research or
clinical).
