(or by appointment)
Required Lab Manual: Caporale, D. 2010. Techniques in Molecular Biology: A Laboratory Manual.
Department of Biology, UW -Stevens Point. For purchase in UWSP Bookstore. ($3.80)
Required Laboratory Notebook: Purchase a small notebook with lined (or graph) paper. This will be
used to take notes in lab to help prepare for your lab reports.
Class Meetings:
Section 1: Tues 10:00am – 12:50pm; Sci B212
Section 2: Thurs 10:00am – 12:50 pm; Sci B212
Course Objectives: 1) to understand basic molecular approaches to answer a variety of biological
questions, and 2) to gain experience in using basic molecular laboratory techniques.

Grading Scale: The grading scale above is firm. There will be no borderline grades. If you attend and
participate in class, read your manual, hand in your lab reports on time and ask questions, then you’ll
find success in accumulating points. The lab participation grade refers to your attendance and effort
during each lab meeting. Guidelines on how to write a lab report are in the lab manual. Late reports
are subject to 10% off each day late.
Attendance Policy: Students who must miss a lab due to religious observances or participation in
university sanctioned events should notify me within the first 3 weeks of the beginning of class, so
makeup arrangements can be made. The only other valid excuses for missing a lab or deadline
are death in the family, violent illness, or accident. In such cases: (1) you must provide evidence
of some kind (e.g. note from health center), and (2) you must reschedule within 24 hrs after the
date of the deadline.
Academic Misconduct: You are responsible for the honest completion and representation of your
work and for the respect of others’ academic endeavors. Any act of cheating, plagiarism, or
academic misconduct is subject to the penalties outlined in UWS Chapter 14.
