Research Experience: (i) Publication of 43 articles in plant taxonomy and flora, the potential economic value of wild plants, and biodiversity data management, together with 6 unpublished reports of research projects on various environmental topics (see list of publications and unpublished reports). (ii) Supervision of 19 M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses in plant taxonomy, including computeraided methods of botanical identification with emphsis on cultivated plants. Also D:\116105331.doc 1 acted as referee for about 35 theses and numerous research papers and books prior to their publication. (iii) Participation in a research project on the distribution, chemistry and nutritive value of rangeland plants of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. (iv) Translation of 2 botanical books from English and Latin into Arabic (5th ed. Of John W. Kimball’s Biology and the 14th ed. Of the Inernational Code of Botanical Nomenclature). (v) Collection and identification of about 2500 species of the flora of England, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Italy (now deposited in the herbarium of the Botany Department, Faculty of Science, Cairo University). Attendance of the numerous conferences concerning biodiversity conservation organized both locally and by UNEP in Nairobi, Kenya. (ix) Between July 1993 and December 1997: participation in the establishment of the biodiversity data base of Egypt as part of a biodiversity data management project at the NBU. It incorporates all avialable data on the taxonomy, local and global distribution, ecology, economic value and pertinent literature dealing with all plants, animals and micro-organisms recorded in Egypt. It is designed to accommodate future items of information as well and all data is easily retrievable. The data base is the nucleus of a network connecting all major referral collections (herbaria, zoos, entomological collections, botanical gardens, etc.) in Egypt and will soon be made globally accessible on the INTERNET.
