The night shift resident will review laboratory data with supervision of attending if necessary and pull aside important labs. For example Positive throat culture Positive blood culture Sensitivities of a bacterium Positive sexually transmitted diseases The resident hands these charts to the clerk. In the morning, the clerk will pull the medical record, and the day shift resident should call the family. Further, in the late morning, the pediatric radiologists will review the x-rays. If there is a discrepancy such as Fracture read as negative Pneumonia read as negative CT scan read by resident as negative and attending with fracture, those charts should also be pulled With the help of the attending physician a disposition will be made. For example, The resident will write a prescription and leave it with the clerk The resident will call in a medicine The resident will recommend the child to come in for reevaluation or treatment. Resident will document each call and three attempts to contact patients by phone will be made. If no contact after three attempts, a letter will be sent. If immediate return of the patient is necessary, and the parent refuses to come in for evaluation or treatment, or a parent cannot be contacted, the resident should contact social services.
