UNC Neurology Clerkship
Number and Kinds of Expected Patient Interactions
This list includes the minimum number and type of patient interactions
expected to be accomplished during the UNC Neurology Clerkship. Please
check off the box when you have personally performed the required
learning activity. Sign and return this card at the end of the clerkship or
as soon as it is complete.
In the Inpatient Setting
Perform a Neurological History and Physical on at least five newly
admitted patients.
Talk with at least 5 families about the patient’s illness and provide
support.
Obtain a history from the chart, family, and staff and perform a
neurological exam on a comatose or obtunded patient.
Together with a supervisory resident, write admitting orders for an
inpatient.
In the Outpatient Setting
Obtain a history and perform a neurological exam on:
A wheelchair bound patient
A patient who does not speak English
An ambulatory adult man
An ambulatory adult woman
In either the Outpatient or Inpatient Setting
See a sick Neurology patient in need of urgent medical attention.
Participate in the care at least as an observer and discuss the case with a
resident or attending physician.
Review at least 1 CCT, 1 spine MRI, and 4 brain MRIs and discuss
them with your resident or attending.
Review at least one EEG tracing and one data sheet for an EMG on a
patient you have seen and discuss it with your attending.
In either the Outpatient or Inpatient Setting
Perform a history and physical examination on patients with 12 of the
following complaints or symptoms. One patient can count for more than
one complaint. Discuss each case with a resident or attending physician.
Dizziness
Diplopia
Dementia
Aphasia
Tremor
Urinary
Incontinence
Dysarthria
Visual loss
Headache
Dysphagia
Sleep Problems
Numbness or
parethesias
Focal weakness
Diffuse weakness
Gait disturbance
Neck and back pain
Transient Deficits
Acute Mental Status Changes
Perform a history and physical exam on patients with at least six of the
following Neurological conditions and discuss each case with a resident or
attending physician.
Increased ICP
SAH
AIDP
Stroke
Migraine
Alzheimers
Parkinson’s
Polyneuropathy
Multiple Sclerosis
Brain Death
Carpal Tunnel
Bell’s Palsy
Epilepsy
Meningitis/ Encephalitis
Metabolic Encephalopathy
Myasthenia Gravis
Temporal Arteritis
Spinal Cord Compression
Neurological Physical Exam
Please have a the supervising resident initial after observing you perform
each of the following pieces of the Neurological PE. A single patient can
count for one, several, or all pieces of the physical exam. Discuss the PE
with your preceptor at the time of the observation.
