Course Description:
The Veteran Living Learning Community is a partnership between the Office of Veteran Affairs, Department of
Residence Life and Faculty, and Students committed to creating a community for student veterans that provides
support, connection, and resources for veterans that promotes success and growth among student veterans. The
primary mission of the living learning community is to help veterans transition from military to student life in a
supportive educational environment. Within the living and learning community, veterans can participate in
programs and events that allow for peer learning and connection with other veterans within the residence hall.
The living and learning community is dedicated to helping veterans navigate the complexities of the college
experience. Students will get specific assistance with registration, advisement, financial aid and be provided
with other academic supports that help facilitate a smooth college transition.

The living learning community is designed to help veterans transition into college and academically succeed at
Vaughn College by providing them with supports and resources that allow them to reach their academic goals.
The following are areas of focus for the living and learning center.
Goal 1: Educational Services



Registration, financial aid and academic advisement sessions specific to veterans to ensure their course
enrollments align with their academic goals and government educational benefit programs.
Veteran First year experience class that provides skills and resources that helps veteran succeed at Vaughn
College. The peer learning experience offered through the course also helps promote and builds lasting
connections among veterans.
Faculty and student interaction (i.e. teaching/mentoring opportunities) inside and outside the classroom geared at
increasing academic and social development of the student.
Goal 2: Establishing Supports


The living and learning center provides workshops and events that connect veteran with campus and community
resources. Workshops will be offered from various offices on campus such a career services, financial aid, and
Office of Counseling and Wellness. The workshops are designed to educate and promote success of our student
veterans.
Off campus organizations such as the VA Hospital and other local veteran organizations will provide workshops
that connect veteran to community supports and resources.

Goal 3: Promoting Health and Wellness



The Office of Counseling and Wellness and Department of Athletics will provide workshops that promote the
social/emotional , mental and physical wellness of our student veterans.
Nutrition, Health, and Stress Management Workshops geared towards overall health promotion are offered to
student veterans.
Individual and group counseling services are offered through the Office of Counseling and Wellness.
Goal 4: Community Service
 The college provides veterans an opportunity to engage in various community service events. (I.e. Toys
for Tots and Peer mentoring).
Goal 5: Socialization
 On and off campus social events will be offered to veteran to increase socialization and build and
expand upon peer network.
Goal 6: Living and Learning Community Experience
 Experience a residential setting that is active, supportive and dedicated to maximizing student veterans
living and learning experiences through programming and activities geared towards the needs of
veterans.
 Designated rooms and living quarters are available for student veterans. Live and connect with other
student veterans that live in the residence hall.
