Workshop Title: “Teaching Students on the Autism Spectrum: An Experiential Training” DATES: August 8 – 12 TIME: 8 – 3:30 LOCATION: Elwyn Davidson School, 111 Elwyn Rd., Elwyn, PA 19063 Description: This training is designed to present information, strategies and techniques to working with students with autism. Participants will take what they have learned in presentations and work directly with student co-trainers in a demonstration classroom. The principles presented in the training are based on “Structured Teaching” approaches from Division TEACCH at UNC-Chapel Hill. Cognitive, developmental and behavioral perspectives are also incorporated. Objectives: Understand the characteristics of autism and the unique perspective of the individual on the autism spectrum. Understand and apply a structured approach to teaching students on the autism spectrum. Participants will be able to organize and conduct individualized informal assessments and develop meaningful learning goals. Develop individualized educational activities and tasks related to identified goals. Identify behavioral problems related to the student’s autism and develop proactive skill based interventions. Participants will expand their understanding of family/caregiver challenges related to raising a child on the autism spectrum and increase their communication skills and team building with those in the home. Identify communication and social needs and develop tasks and activities that are relevant to the needs of students with autism.
