ON VIEW IN THE HOUSE October 25, 2015- February 28, 2016 SCOTT WOLNIAK: LANDSCAPE RECORD Opening reception Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 3-5 pm More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/scott-wolniaklandscape-record Scott Wolniak deploys rigorous, transformative processes to complicate relationships between found and made, slow and fast, appearing and disappearing, surface and interior. His latest carved plaster tablets and graphite drawings arrive at similar aesthetic states but from opposite directions: the painted tablets respond to surface texture and chance operations, excavating compositions through deconstructive sgraffito techniques, while the drawings depart from landscape imagery and are built up into complex, almost-recognizable images created through a process of repetitive mark-making, erasure, and re-drawing. For Wolniak, there is a meditative effect in repetitive action, and the accumulation of intricate, layered marks yield phenomenological fields: "Millions of small gestures add up to create spatial energy that is not necessarily about my hand." EVENTS DISTANCE Performances: October 10 & October 11 at 4 pm (reception follows performance on October 10) Tickets: $12/$8 students & seniors More information and to purchase tickets: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/distance As part of her yearlong residency, Pegi Christiansen invited Theresa Columbus (Baltimore, Maryland), John Loscuito (Naples, Florida) and Jennifer Holmes (Whittier, California) to collaborate with her on a performance and exhibition at Lynden. Each month, beginning in Sepember 2013, the artists shot self-portraits at dawn and created visual and written exquisite corpses. In August, they came together at Lynden to develop a site-sensitive performance based on their far-flung collaboration. Inspired by the Surrealist embodiment of chance, Distance explores place, relationships, and memory. The exhibition remains on view through October 11. A POETRY WORKSHOP WITH MATT COOK, MILWAUKEE'S POET LAUREATE In collaboration with Woodland Pattern Book Center Saturday, October 3, 2015 - 10 am-4 pm Fee: $65 general public / $60 members More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/whydefend-kingdom-dullness-poetry-workshop-matt-cook Lynden Sculpture Garden & Woodland Pattern Book Center are delighted to host Milwaukee Poet Laureate Matt Cook as our fall writer-in-residence. For his weekend residency, Matt will give a reading at Woodland Pattern on Friday evening, October 2, and conduct a writing workshop at Lynden on Saturday, October 3. "It’s a rhetorical question," Cook assures us, referring to the workshop's title. "It’s actually Kenneth Koch’s rhetorical question, but that’s not the point. The point is not to defend the kingdom of dullness. But don’t worry, in this workshop I will not judge how dull you are, and it wouldn’t matter if I did: some extraordinarily dull writers are hugely successful. And it’s important to remember that they got successful by not listening to people like me! Still, I think I’m pretty snappy and I’ve been writing and thinking and talking about poetry for a long time. Anyway, come to Lynden and we'll write some poems. Then we'll try to say some smart things about them with the hope of amusing ourselves and perhaps even making the poems better. And if we don’t come up anything good, we’ll read a few poems by writers who have." WILD SEED HARVESTING WITH PAT HIDSON & TORI TASCH Saturday, October 3, 2015 - 12-3 pm Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. PRIMITIVE RAKU: A CERAMICS WORKSHOP WITH KATHERYN CORBIN Saturday, October 17, 2015 – 10 am-4 pm Fee: $85/$75 members More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/primitive-raku-2015 In the past, Native Americans probably made clay vessels on what are now the grounds of Lynden. In these pre-glaze days, pots were sealed by rubbing river mud into the surfaces, sealing the goodness in the container. We will spend a fall day at Lynden with ceramic artist Katheryn Corbin forming vessels using traditional techniques: pinching, coiling, and smoothing. We will use sigellatta, a form of deflocculated clay, instead of river mud, to seal our pots. After bisque firing, Corbin will return to Lynden for a smoke firing. The smoke blackens the pots, leaving them with a subtle, shining finish. (Attendance at smoke firing voluntary.) INTRODUCTION TO GREEN LAWN CARE & OTHER ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY LANDSCAPE PRACTICES Saturday, October 24, 2015 - 2-4 pm Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/introduction-greenlawn-care Andy Yencha, Lynden's new land manager, launches a series of workshops on environmentally friendly landscape practices for homeowners and backyard gardeners. This program will look at a variety of landscape practices and management strategies, many currently in use at the Lynden Sculpture Garden, designed to make our lawns and planting beds look good while reducing storm water runoff as well as the need for pesticides and fertilizer applications. Topics will include tips on designing, siting and building rain gardens; low input lawn care techniques; rain water harvesting tips with rain barrels and larger cisterns; and the use of water permeable materials, like brick pavers and porous masonry blocks, for patios and walkways. The two-hour session will include a tour of the lawn, prairie and rain garden at Lynden. grow WORKSHOP WITH YEVGENIYA KAGANOVICH Sunday, October 25, 2015 – 1-5 pm Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/grow-2015 Yevgeniya Kaganovich and her student assistants take up residence in the studio to make the next “planting” of grow, Kaganovich’s durational installation. Drop in to watch or participate as Kaganovich fuses the layers of plastic to create a surface similar to leather or skin, molds the skin into plant-like volumes, stuffs the volumes with more bags, and connects the forms with plastic bag “thread.” Tasks include cutting sheets and strips; fusing sheets and tubes; sewing bulb forms and connecting them to bases; crocheting tubes and necks; stuffing stalks; and assembling the plants.
