Winter Storms Safety Precautions
Highlights
Procedure Guidelines
The following winter storm safety precautions have been established for all personnel to
follow during blizzards, heavy snows, freezing rain, ice-storms, or sleet. Others may be added
or become necessary.
Weather Bulletins
1.
Keep posted on all area weather bulletins.
Portable Transistor Radio
2.
Have portable transistor radio available. Make sure extra batteries are available.
Isolation
3.
Be prepared for isolation at the facility.
Emergency
Equipment/Supplies
4.
Make sure all emergency equipment and supplies are on hand, or can be readily
obtained.
Emergency Food Supplies
5.
Make sure emergency food supplies and equipment is on hand.
Emergency Water Supply
6.
Make sure emergency supply of water is available.
Emergency Power Supply
7.
Make sure emergency power supply is operable.
Heating System
8.
Make sure heating system is operable.
Extra Blankets
9.
Have extra blankets available.
Emergency Heating
10.
Make sure emergency heating equipment is on hand or can be readily obtained.
Adequate Staff
11.
Make sure adequate staff is available.
Flashlights
12.
Keep flashlights handy. Have extra batteries available.
13.
Keep residents as warm as possible.
14.
Close drapes on cloudy days and at night.
15.
Be prepared to remain at the facility.
Cold Stress Procedures
16.
Know our cold stress procedures.
Job Assignment
17.
Know your job assignment.
Travel
18.
Travel only when necessary and only during daylight hours.
Travel Routes
19.
Never travel alone.
20.
Travel routes assigned.
Road Conditions
21.
Report road conditions to the facility.
Evacuation
22.
Be prepared to evacuate residents if necessary.
Unnecessary Trips
23.
Do not make any unnecessary trips outside.
Dressing Properly
24.
If trips outside become necessary make sure you are properly dressed, to include head
gear, wraps, gloves, etc.
Overexertion
25.
Avoid overexertion. Cold weather causes extra strain on the heart. Do only what is
necessary.
26.
Do not panic, remain calm.
