TEAM IN TRAINING - MISSION STATEMENT Team In Training Mission Statement: Team In Training is a comprehensive endurance training program for runners, walkers, and cyclists to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The goal of Team In Training is to increase funding to support the Society’s mission while promoting fitness and healthy life-styles. TNT is the World’s Largest Endurance Training Program! EVENT DESCRIPTION This year, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will train an estimated 30,000 runners, walkers, cyclists, and triathletes to participate in a marathon, century ride, or Olympic distance triathlon in our most successful fundraising program nationwide, TEAM IN TRAINING. During its history, the Team In Training program has experienced tremendous growth, raising $1.3 million in 1993 to $87 million in 2005. The Connecticut Chapter has been an integral part of this success. Our first CT team consisted of 14 runners who participated in the New York City marathon in 1994 and raised $20,000. In the coming year, we anticipate TNT to raise over $1.5 million with over to 350 athletes in CT alone. Team In Training offers runners, walkers and cyclists of all fitness abilities a four to six month comprehensive training program under the guidance of our special volunteers: Run Coaches - Becky Burke, Mark Davison, Brian Daring, Nancy Niederdorfer, Steve Baker, Leigh Delbuono, Jodi Hagen, Tom Harding, Melissa Reynolds, Michele Colgan, Kris Hilborn, Amy Mazurski, Kitty Brown and Mike Ambrosecchio. Each member of our team is participating in honor of a child or adult from our community affected by leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease or myeloma. Completing a marathon, century ride or triathlon is a celebration of human spirit, physical ability and mental endurance. For members of Team In Training, it is also a celebration of life. OUR AUDIENCE By offering personalized running, walking and cycling programs, Team In Training attracts a wide audience. ABOUT THE SOCIETY The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Inc. is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. The Society supports five major programs, research, patient aid, public and professional education and community service. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has allocated more than $550 million to research, supporting individual medical investigators to continue to study and advance the knowledge of leukemia and related cancers and ultimately cure the diseases. CONNECTICUT CHAPTER The Connecticut Chapter serves all of Connecticut and is one of 66 chapters nationwide and in Canada. The chapter supports 5 researchers at Yale University School of Medicine. Up to date educational materials and a quarterly newsletter are sent free of charge to individuals and health care professionals in hospitals, agencies and libraries. In addition, the Society provides up to $500 per year for outpatient expenses to patients with leukemia and related cancers. Family support groups have been established for children, siblings, parents and Bone Marrow Transplant patients. They are facilitated on a volunteer basis by oncology nurses, social workers and counselors. The Connecticut Chapter supports bone marrow typing drives throughout the chapter area, increasing the number and diversity of the national bone marrow registry. ABOUT LEUKEMIA Leukemia is a malignancy of the blood forming tissues - bone marrow, lymph nodes and spleen. It appears as uncontrolled multiplication of abnormal blood cells. When leukemia strikes millions of abnormal and useless white blood cells accumulate in the tissues, preventing production of normal cells. It is estimated that leukemia and its related cancers will strike 100,000 Americans this year. Leukemia is the number one killing disease of children, yet affects 10 times as many adults. The cause of leukemia remains unknown. However, the effectiveness of recently developed treatment methods and steady advances in research bring us closer every day to finding the cause of leukemia and related cancers and probable cures. This is why we need your help. By joining us as a TEAM IN TRAINING Corporate Sponsor, you will have a direct impact on the success of a major fund raising event, bringing The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society one step closer to a cure, and at the same time providing your company with important community visibility. We invite you to join TEAM CONNECTICUT in realizing our ambitious goal.
