Dear… Please join the County of Los Angeles and 21 of your fellow cities by declaring December 18 th as “A Day Without a Bag”. In Los Angeles County alone we use over 6 billion plastic bags a year and we see the costs to our city and the environment at every turn. Your cities resolution will provide additional critical attention for the event. By joining this campaign, <<City Name>> will help to encourage consumers to forgo single-use bags for the holiday shopping season. This is a major step towards combating the urban blight that ultimately turns into marine debris, through our storm drain system. As a vehicle for raising community awareness about personal choices, A Day Without a Bag focuses on education, rather than advocacy. The long term goal of the event is to empower communities at large to take simple, direct actions to eliminate unsightly debris and save taxpayer dollars. Please join us this year, by proclaiming December 18th as the second annual, A Day Without a Bag! <<City Name>> can participate by hosting bag giveaways and providing reusable bag education at a municipal or retail location. Heal the Bay is coordinating the distribution of thousands of free, reusable bags to shoppers across the county on December 18th. Last year, municipal partners printed their own bags and distributed them at City Hall, Chamber of Commerce and Public Library sites. If you do not have bags to hand out we have a limited amount of bags available through our partnership with the County of Los Angeles and other retail partners. This year our retail, grocery and supermarket partners (including Ralphs, Food 4 Less, 99¢ Only Stores, and Bed Bath & Beyond) are participating by: providing free reusable bags to customers making singleday purchases totaling a certain amount; doubling any existing reusable bag rebates or offers; or giving out free reusable bags (while supplies last). To confirm your participation, or for any information on A Day Without a Bag’s coalition partners, events or resources, contact us at 310.451.1500 x 116 or via email at mmccarthy@healthebay.org. Thank you for your consideration and support. Sincerely Meredith McCarthy Programs Director Heal the Bay
