Other NEWS Trinity Sunday The first Sunday after Pentecost or Whitsun. Its observance as a celebration embracing God in all three Persons was universally enjoined in the West in 1334. Sundays are reckoned after Trinity in the Sarum Missal and in the BCP and not after Pentecost as was usual in the Roman rite until 1969. Cornish AME Zion Pastor Appreciation Service will be Sat., June 9, 2012 at 5:00 P.M. THIS WEEK AT TRINITY Trinity [Lat.,=threefoldness], fundamental doctrine in Christianity, by which God is considered as existing in three persons. While the doctrine is not explicitly taught in the New Testament, early Christian communities testified to a perception that Jesus was God in the flesh; the idea of the Trinity has been inferred from the Gospel of St. John. The developed doctrine of the Trinity purports that God exists in three coequal and coeternal elements—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It sees these "persons" as constituted by their mutual relations, yet does not mean that God in his essence is Father, or a male deity. Jesus spoke of a relation of mutual giving and love with the Father, which believers could also enjoy through the Spirit. The Trinity is commemorated liturgically in the Western Church on Trinity Sunday . Patricia Thornton PRAYER OF PRAISE Holy, holy, holy God, all the earth is full of your majesty. The lightning flash is a sign of your creative voice. Thunder resounds with the magnitude of your power and strength. The rains fall as a reminder of your gentle refreshment. The sun shines in testimony to the warmth of your love. All creation is your temple; none can hide from you. Exposed to your grandeur and led by your Spirit, we give you all praise and honor, God of our lives. Amen. *CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: From you, O God, comes my praise in the great congregation. People: My vows I will pay before those who fear the Lord. Leader: All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord. People: And all the families of the nations shall worship you, O God, our Lord, and our Redeemer. Leader: Let us worship God. We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of the Father before all worlds. God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and who was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen WELCOME & THE PEACE *OPENING HYMN #138: "Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty" INVOCATION ASSURANCE OF PARDON: Leader: After Isaiah had confessed his uncleanness, a seraph flew to him, carrying a burning coal from the altar. The seraph touched Isaiah and said, “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has parted and your sin is blotted out.” The sacrifice of Christ at the altar of god’s eternal grace has touched our lives, and we too can rest in the assurance of God’s pardon. *GLORIA PATRI MUSICAL PRELUDE PROCESSIONAL: sham. We do not do what you command. We proclaim not your love, since we seldom serve others. We confess Christ as Savior, yet obey him indifferently, if at all. Our discipleship suffers, for we heed not your guidance. We are in need of repentance as we confess our sins. Have mercy upon us, and grant us you pardon. Elder Linda McLeod CALL TO CONFESSION CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH THE OFFERING Offertory: "I Thank You, Jesus" (ZSS 164) PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison): Source of redeeming grace and infinite goodness, bear us as in Christ we pray for forgiveness. While you reach out to us in fellowship, we turn from you in Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. Elder Jean Fortson “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
