Flower Group Christmas Dinner:
To date Sandra has had no-one contact her following her request
for volunteers for the Ladies’ Christmas Dinner. If you are
interested in doing starters, the main course, or the desserts,
please contact Sandra as soon as possible. Tel: 2595681
Obviously the date of the dinner will be determined by
whoever hosts the “main course”.
Harvest Festival
We are very grateful to Revd David & Linda Bosworth (Gill’s
parents) for conducting our Harvest service. The church looked
beautiful thanks to the generosity of the village in donating many
gifts of food and there were also some beautiful flower
decorations. David & Linda made the service very enjoyable and
got everyone involved – culminating in giving everyone a daffodil
bulb wrapped in gold foil – no-one guessed what was in the
wrapping and suggestions of conkers, sweets, stones etc were
given! It was a lovely surprise to find a bulb and ours have been
planted in a special pot so that we will know which ones they are
when they bloom in the spring!
It was a shame that David and Linda could not stay for the Harvest
Bring & Share supper at Nether Hall but they had to get back to
Beverley in East Yorkshire that evening. The supper was as good
as ever, with a fine selection of wine and food and many thanks to
Hugh & Elizabeth for making Nether Hall available yet again for
this occasion!
Thank you to Elizabeth for taking our donations to the “Y” Centre –
a task she undertakes each year and for which we are very
grateful and certainly the Y Centre benefit hugely from these gifts.
Sue
Whilst on the subject of church services, I would like to express
our thanks to Revd Canon Philip Norwood, Revd Gordon
Richmond, Revd Canon Jane Curtis, Revd Richard Curtis and all
the other priests who have helped us out with our services. So far
we have managed to “keep going” and we are busy trying to
arrange cover for services right through to next April.
BAPTISM
The baptism of little Layton Staines was a joyous occasion. It was a
beautiful afternoon on 10th October and the church was decorated for
harvest so it really was an occasion to think about “all good gifts around
us”. Revd Canon Jane Curtis took the service and we are very grateful to
her. Layton stayed asleep throughout the whole of the service. It was
lovely to see Kirk and Jay so happy and proud of their baby son and we
hope they will bring Layton back to Keyham from time to time so that we
can see how he is developing.
What a privilege it was to play the organ at such a happy event.

Dates for your diaries
NOVEMBER
Sunday 28th Service of Lights at 6pm.
There will be a short service before the lights are
switched on and the names of loved ones
remembered will be read out. To sponsor a light
please see Trevor or Sue so that names can be put
in the Remembrance Book before the service takes
place. The sponsor donations will be given to a
charity yet to be decided. Last year it was MacMillan
Nurses and we hope to raise as much money this
year for an equally worthy charity.

ON THE SEVENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF
THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
Spitfire steeds carried Knights
To Channel tilting lists,
Roundels jousted Swastikas;
Some, maiden Death had kissed.
This Tournament was real,
The Force of Darkness strong,
Knights rode into battle
Their spitting steel a song.
Mounted, ours flew charging
To throw the Dark Knights down;
Many died in jousting
Still bearing England’s Crown.
Now threescore years and ten
Have passed – a lifetime whole –
But that deadly battle
Still rouses every soul.
Oddly
NEWS OF THE VILLAGE
Congratulations to Ros and Brian on their Golden Wedding
Anniversary which they will be celebrating at the end of October.
They will be celebrating their anniversary with the family on holiday
in Bakewell – we hope you have a very happy time.
I (Sue) entered a competition for children’s songs and have
managed to get one published in a new book for songs for
primary/junior schools. This may be tried out at Keyham church in
the not too distant future – this may sound as if I am “blowing my
own trumpet” but I am thrilled as it is the first time I have managed
to get beyond the first hurdle!
I am currently adapting the music “A Winter’s Tale” for singing at
the Carol Service. Have I any volunteers for singing it at the Carol
Service on Thursday 16 December, please? Any standard of voice
would be welcome.
Sue
Well done!
To Gill Wheeler and Sophie Bridgwood on completing the
Leicester Half Marathon on Sunday 10th October. They both
completed the run in very respectable times (Gill was even under
2 hours which cost Matt much more in sponsorship money!) and
Sophie was only just over the 2 hours – a wonderful achievement
as she has never done any running before. Both were raising
money for The Hope Foundation (the local Cancer charity).
Both Gill and Sophie managed to come to the Harvest Festival
service later in the day – looking remarkably refreshed and not
even limping! They fully deserved their share of the Harvest
supper after the service!
I am sure if anyone would like to add to their sponsor money it
would be gratefully received!
Sue
P.S.
I did check in the “Leicester Mercury” list of Marathon “finishers”
to make sure they were both on the list – not to check their times
but just to make me feel proud that their names were there!
LOW IMPACT AEROBICS TO MUSIC
Do come along to the Village Hall commencing 12th January 2011 for
eight weeks only. The session will last one hour commencing 7.00pm –
and during this time the tutor, Carol Thomas from Houghton on the Hill,
will take us through:
Warm up, low impact aerobics, body conditioning, stretching
and relaxation.
This class is designed for all members of the village, all ages, shapes and sizes –
a bit of fun and exercise after the Christmas festivities. There will be no charge
at all – it is being underwritten by the Charities (to whom we are most grateful).
Please come along – and get into shape with your neighbours.

A REMINDER …………..
Don’t forget to put the
KEYHAM BURNS NIGHT supper in your diaries:
It is on: Saturday 22nd January 2011 in the village hall.
Further details will follow.
An on-going reminder………….
KEYHAM OPEN GARDENS weekend: 18th & 19th
June 2011.
Elizabeth thanks whoever left many plant pots on her
doorstep – they were gratefully received as I know she is very
busy “potting up” etc. Donations of plant pots are still
required.
Don’t forget to be “getting things together” for Open Gardens
whenever you have the opportunity!
Keyham Open Gardens 18 & 19 June 2011
At the Village Meeting earlier this year it was decided that Open
Gardens 2011 would be held on 18th and 19th June. Please keep
this date clear so that you are able to be involved in this important
event that is so vital for the ongoing viability of the Village Hall and
Church.
Having set the event date already, I don't think we need to meet
before Christmas. However, we will need to start planning very
soon into the New Year.
To this end, a meeting will take place on Monday 10th January at
7.30pm in the Village Hall. This is an open meeting and all
villagers are invited along.
Please feel free to discuss any ideas or issues with me prior to
that date.

Committee
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------31st Annual LOROS Winter Walk - Monday 27 December 2010
Please join us for this year's annual local fund raising event.
This year's Winter Walk falls on Monday 27th December.
Throughout 2010 LOROS will be commemorating 25 years of
caring for patients at the Hospice, off Groby Road, Leicester,
which, thanks to development over the years, now has 31 inp[atient beds where specialist pain relief and symptom control are
provided. The aim of this care is to enhance the quality of life both
to the patient and the family.
The walk starts between 9am and 10am from Houghton Village
Hall (or 9.30am at the Dog & Gun if you are starting from
Keyham), with the issue of maps and a warming glass of mulled
wine before setting off for Keyham. Volunteers are ready to
welcome you at Keyham Village Hall with a half-way hot drink and
soup. We are grateful to the Dog & Gun, who will be serving free
mulled wine and Keyham Kennels will once again be providing
free children's goody bags.
The distance is 5 friendly field miles and dogs are welcome (but
please keep on leads - if children are around).
This event could not take place without the help of volunteers at
both village halls; if you can spare the morning or even a few
hours, please contact me as soon as possible as the plans are
well under way for this year's event.
Sponsor forms will hopefully be ready by early November - if you
require a form or would like to help pleae contact me.
Thanks
