ASHBOURNE RUNNING CLUB NEWSLETTER – AUTUMN 2008
From the Chairman:
Firstly thanks to you all for continuing to support the club so well and make it such a
vibrant focus of running activity in Ashbourne ! We have tried a few new thing this
summer and you have really taken to them - most notably the inaugural club
championship - with only 1 race to go, no fewer then 47 of you have taken part in at
least 1 local race and I know for some it has been the spur needed to 'just have a go.'
I hope you have found the experience of racing fun and some reward for all the
training over the winter months ! Thanks to Ian for his hard work behind the scenes
selecting races and collating results. Another new introduction is the website
Message Board/'Blog' (http://www.ashbournerunningclub.org.uk/phpBB3/index.php).
What a great way to post ideas about training, events, arrange car sharing etc, or as
Martin, Caren and Paul have especially been doing - post reports soon after the their
races. If you haven't logged on and read some of these reports - I urge you to do so they are raw, often emotional accounts of how they felt at the time but a chance for all
us all to share in their experience and very inspiring. Thanks to Russell for creating
this valuable new addition to the webpage. Well, we are now firmly into Autumn
running - in the mud at weekends - what a fantastic Dovedale Dash this year; and
dark in the evenings - remember to prepare a little more before leaving the house
whether its on Tuesday club night or on your own - bright/reflective gear a must, and
think about the weather forecast to get your number of layers and waterproof right
!!Warm up well, Cool Down even better and above all, Happy Running ! Howard
Safety. The Committee reminds all members of the need to wear
suitably bright/reflective clothing when running with the Club at night.
The Club cannot be held responsible if members ignore this warning.
Mayor of Ashbourne. Club member Phil Chell has become Mayor of Ashbourne,
having previously served a demanding year as Deputy Mayor. Never before have we
had a Running Club Member as Mayor. At the time of writing, Phil is half way through
his term of office. He has put his heart and soul into the work and is a credit to
himself and Sue. (And he is proving to be nicely photogenic, as witnessed by the
many pictures of him in the Ashbourne Telegraph !).
Lisa and Andrew Lee. Saturday 1 November 08 – congratulations on the arrival of
Sophie Joanne Lee - 9lbs 6.5 ozs.
Club Anniversary Lunch – 2 November 08. Held at the Bentley Brook after the
Dove Dale Dash. An excellent event to which we invited founder-members with well
received speeches from Howard, as present Chairman, and past Chairmen John
Hammond, Wilf Allen, Martin Stocks and Phil Chell. Our thanks to John Page for all
the hard work which went into organising.
Davina Harrison. 'Mont-Blanc awaits Davina' was the headline in the Ashbourne
Telegraph 16 July 08. Unknown to may of us, Davina ran the 166 km Ultra-Trail du
Mont-Blanc in 07. Having struggled with a serious foot problem which lead to
operations (she now has four screws in her foot to hold it together !) Davina is back
doing the ultra races she loves.

For the Record. The first race was on 8 December 1991. Present members
who ran that day were Louise Hammond (now Louise Surgay), Ann Lemon,
Carol Hammond, John Hammond, Ian Barker, Keith Brownlee, Janice Clowes,
Derek Brownlee and Wilf Allen. There has been a race every year since then 18 races in all - although unfortunately the records for 1999 are missing. In
that time there have only been six members named as the Fastest Runner because four of them have been in that position more than once, including
Martin Stocks five times and, for those of you who know him, Ian Bull - seven
times. Also of note is that Ann Lemon has taken part in all but one of the
races.
Lathkill Fell Race – 9 November 08 - 7.1 miles. Tim Saul 65:13, Richard Broadhead
66:03, Steve Tooms 67:22. Tim lost a trainer in the mud so did well to finish.
