EXTENDED DAY GROWTH EDUCATION
Here is basic information regarding the EDGE program and a handout for interested
instructors.
IMPLEMENTATION/PURPOSE:
In January of 2002, the Seven Oaks School Division initiated an exciting program geared towards middle
year students in grades 6 to 8. Ages range from 11 – 13 years. EDGE (Extended Day Growth
Education) was designed to offer students activities they can participate in directly after the day’s
dismissal at their own school. This program fills the gap between the end of the school day and the
supper hour. Many students at this age are too old for a day care program, yet too young to have an after
school job. Long-term goals are to diminish the amount of students who are home alone and curb less
desirable ways of filling this time. EDGE provides a safe, entertaining and educational alternative for both
the students and the parents.
Initially this program started in two of the Division’s Middle schools, H.C. Avery and Ecole Seven Oaks.
We have expanded into the remaining 6 middle schools in the Division: O.V. Jewitt, Arthur Wright, Elwick,
West St. Paul, Edmund Partridge and Ecole Leila North. These schools are located in and around the
Garden City/Maples area.
The EDGE programming mandate is to provide courses in all areas of extended education and requires a
large cross-section of choices and experiences. This includes learning new skills that may spark the
beginning of career choices for the students. They offer growth in imagination, creativity, intellectual and
physical abilities.
Examples of previous EDGE programming:
Improv/Drama
Electronics
Writer’s/Reader’s Circles
Youth Grooming
Web Design
Babysitters Cert.
Poster Art
Hip Hop/Jazz
Self-Defense
Robotics
Cartooning
Journal Writing
Playwriting
Radio Broadcast
Arts & Crafts
Cooking
Breakdancing
Flag Football
Model Building
Film Making
School Newspaper
…Including a special Adopt-A-Grandparent program at local Senior Residence facilities plus many other
programs.
Programs are required in every area. Courses in sewing, knitting, crocheting, scrap booking, bicycle
repair, cooking, stained glass, quilting, dance forms, paper mache, art programs, math programs, plus
many, many more.
EDGE continually looks for innovative programs and instructors. The objective is to enlist those who are
interested in youth growth education. We are approaching a variety of individuals searching for new
programs and instructors. If you or someone you know is willing to share their talents, please read the
following information:
SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAM
Programs generally run from 2:45 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. but this is determined by school dismissal time during
the school week. Courses run for a duration of 8 weeks and are offered 3 times per school year in the
fall, winter and spring. Instructor(s) generally teach one to two times per week but may teach up to 5
times per week. Should program registration be high we do have the option of opening more classes if
the instructor is willing. Programs are always subject to the final registration and may be cancelled at any
time due to low enrollment.
We are presently looking for FALL 2009 session instructors. Programs may be combined or split into
different classes depending on instructor availability and interest. Instructors may choose the day(s) of
the week most suitable for them I.E. Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday, Monday
through to Friday or any combination that works for the instructor.
Our FALL session will begin the week of Oct 13, 2009 and will run for a period of 8 weeks ending the
week of November 30 – December 7, 2009. Should a class need to be made up due to regular holidays
or for other reasons that may arise, we do have the option of making up missed classes by offering a
makeup class sometime during the weeks. All courses run on in-service days but this sometimes results
in lower attendance due to bussing.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Reliability and Dependability is a key factor
Resume/Experience History

Instructors within the Seven Oaks School Division are required to obtain a Criminal Records Check
available through the Public Safety Building on Princess at a cost of approx. $30.00 and a Child Abuse
Registry check through 201-114 Garry Street at a cost of approx. $10.00 which, is refundable through
EDGE with submission of receipts. These forms must be applied for prior to start of the sessions. If
you already have current forms I will need a copy dated within the past year.
We also require general information including banking as payments are made by direct deposit. Payment

All of this information will be provided and explained at time of interview regarding a potential course. If
you already have this information with the school (i.e. TA or Sub with Division) we will make a notation
that you are currently on file with the Division.
EDGE pays for all supplies needed to conduct a course. A small registration fee is applied to each
course per student to help cover these costs.
Once an instructor has committed to having their program included with EDGE it is important to
ensure that you are able to carry out the full term of your commitment to the students. If for any
reason it is impossible to fulfill this commitment you are obligated to continue until you have
secured a suitable replacement. Failure to do so will result in wages paid being withheld. Parents
and students depend on the reliability of their instructor and course.
If you are interested I will need to know as early as possible to include your program in the FALL
PROGRAM registration package. Programs and instructors need to be set prior to, August 31, 2009 so
the registration booklet can be printed for distribution to the student population. Interested instructors
should not delay and contact me immediately.
