INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT/ SCLEROTHERAPY
BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT/PRE-PROCEDURE:
1. Do not drink alcoholic beverages and do not smoke 2 days before and 2 days after your treatment, since
this may impair the healing process. Eat something substantial before treatment, not just coffee.
2. The day of your procedure/treatment, shower and wash your legs thoroughly. Do not apply any cream
or lotion to your legs.
3. To avoid discomfort, do not shave your legs on the day of your appointment.
4. Bring a pair of comfortable shorts to wear during the treatment. Dress in comfortable clothes and shoes.
5. Avoid the use of aspirin or ibuprofen for 5 days before and after treatment if possible.
6. Bring your elastic stockings for after your treatment. If you do not have a pair, you could purchase and
be fitted for one at the end of your first treatment.
7. Do no wax your legs 1 week prior and up to 2 weeks after treatment.
ABOUT THE TREATMENT:
The treatment consists of a series of injections, followed by the application of stockings and possibly a
compression wrap. The solutions have been developed exclusively for this treatment. It is a very safe, successful
treatment; however, the response following the injections should be understood. Typically, the injected areas
may be sensitive and swell slightly. The area may look black and blue, or bruised. The small vessels may
change color. The discoloration is normal. It will disappear as the healing process takes place. None of this
should cause alarm.
On larger vessels, some lumps may form along the treated veins. You may have some redness, and tenderness
along the vein route. This response to the injection is normal. Eventually the vein will disappear, but you may be
able to feel it with your hand. Again, this is normal and your body will reabsorb this in time. Many patients go
through the treatment with almost none of these reactions at all. As stated, these responses to treatment are not
serious, harmful or dangerous and are only temporary in duration. It is important to remember that is has often
taken years for these veins to develop and they will not disappear overnight. Be patient and allow time for
healing to occur.
AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT/POST-PROCEDURE:
1. Immediately after the procedure, you will need to wear the stockings for 48 hours (must wear
overnight). On the following day, compression stockings must be worn during the day for the next 2
weeks. The longer the compression stockings are tolerated the better the outcome of your treatment.
2. You will be able to maintain normal activities. However, avoid standing for long periods of time. No
aerobics, heavy lifting of strenuous physical exercises for 7 days following treatment.
3. Avoid hot showers for at least 3-5 days.
4. Treated areas may be temporarily tender, slightly red and swollen. You may apply ICE directly over the
site for comfort. In the event of scabbing, do no pick or remove it; you may apply over the counter topical
antibiotic or 1% hydrocortisone ointments. These effects are rare and very short in duration.
Acetaminophen, Advil or Motrin can be used to treat minor discomfort.
5. Avoid direct sun exposure, (tanning or beach) for one week; this may cause skin staining at treated area,
which may be resolved after some time.
6. After healing, you may use stockings for long trips, prolonged standing, or when your legs ache.
7. Follow any additional instructions and schedule follow-up appointments as indicated by physician.
8. Darkness of the skin along the injection site is a common side effect; it is caused by the hemoglobin in
the blood. This will improve with time. If the discoloration persists after 3-4 weeks we can prescribe an at
home bleaching agent.
9. Sun screen is important on a regular basis but is mandatory for the first 2-3 months after the sclero
treatment. Spray on tanners or lotions are okay.
10. Walk, walk, walk. 20 minutes, twice a day is encouraged. Avoid strenuous exercise such as aerobics,
weight training, or running for about 7 days.
As with any medical treatment, you should follow the physician’s instructions completely to achieve the best
results. If any questions arise, please call this office at any time. 407-865-7091 (after hours call 407-7678554)
