NZQA registered unit standard 20760 version 3 Page 1 of 4 Title Monitor and control contamination in wood chip and wood fibre materials Level 3 Credits 7 Purpose People credited with unit standard are able to: manage hazards associated with monitoring and controlling wood chip and wood fibre materials contamination; demonstrate knowledge of customer specifications with respect to contaminants; identify wood chip and wood fibre material contaminants and their sources, and take corrective actions to eliminate or minimise the possibility of contamination; and demonstrate knowledge of wood chip and wood fibre quality requirements. Classification Wood Handling and Distribution > Wood Preparation Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 All evidence requirements must be demonstrated and assessed in accordance with the reference text: Chip and Wood Fibre Testing, published by Competenz and available from Competenz at http://www.competenz.org.nz, or Competenz, PO Box 9005, Newmarket, Auckland 1149. 2 The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard: a All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed the code) for personal, product and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under current legislation, including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments. b All work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities, events, and decisions. c All evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing and method. 3 Definitions Corrective action may include actions such as communication to management, communication to on-site technical person, communication to off-site technical support person, cleaning, communication with maintenance staff, recalibration, or changes made to the operating system in accordance with worksite documentation. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 20760 version 3 Page 2 of 4 Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Manage hazards associated with monitoring and controlling wood chip and wood fibre materials contamination. Evidence requirements 1.1 Hazards associated with monitoring and controlling wood chip and wood fibre materials contamination are identified and actions to be taken to isolate, minimise or eliminate the hazards are described. Range 1.2 hazards may include but are not limited to – moving equipment, dust, mobile plant, noise; evidence of four is required. Safe work practices associated with monitoring and controlling wood chip and/or wood fibre materials contamination are identified and used in accordance with legislative requirements and worksite policies and procedures. Range practices may include but are not limited to – isolation procedures, lock-outs, emergency stops, machine guarding, the wearing of appropriate safety equipment; evidence of five is required. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of customer specifications with respect to contaminants. Evidence requirements 2.1 Customer specifications for wood chip and wood fibre materials with respect to contamination are described in accordance with the reference text. 2.2 Effects of contaminants in wood chip and wood fibre materials during further processing are described. Outcome 3 Identify wood chip and wood fibre material contaminants and their sources, and take corrective actions to eliminate or minimise the possibility of contamination. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 20760 version 3 Page 3 of 4 Evidence requirements 3.1 Sources of potential contamination in wood chip and wood fibre materials are described in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 3.2 Types of wood chip and wood fibre material contamination are identified and matched with appropriate corrective actions in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 3.3 sources may include but are not limited to – raw materials, condition of processing equipment, wood fibre material transport systems, storage area and transport vehicles. contamination may include but is not limited to – rubber, plastic, fabric, bark, paper, grit, metal, mill refuse, equipment componentry, and treatment chemicals. Appropriate controls are developed to eliminate or minimise the possibility of contamination arising from the sources identified in evidence requirement 3.1, and implemented in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Outcome 4 Demonstrate knowledge of wood chip and wood fibre quality requirements. Evidence requirements 4.1 Factors that influence the final product quality are described. Range factors include – raw materials, processes, equipment, action of people. 4.2 Wood chip and wood fibre material testing and reporting regimes are described in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. 4.3 Procedures for handling actual or suspected contamination incidents are described in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. 4.4 Wood chip and wood fibre material quality management system components are identified and their purpose is described in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.
