Professional Standards and Expectations
Preamble
Each member of Iowa State University’s College of Business community accepts personal
responsibility to support and represent the College’s high ethical standards and to promote an
environment where all individuals may succeed academically, professionally, and personally.
Further, each member of the community is committed to the College’s mission to link theory
with practice for tomorrow’s business leaders.
Professional Standards and Expectations
As a College of Business student,

I treat all individuals with respect and dignity.

I strive to set a standard of professional behavior when representing the College and
University at external events.

I strive to set a standard of professional behavior in the academic and professional aspects
of my life outside of the classroom.

I am committed to scholastic honesty and integrity.

I respect our College facility by maintaining a safe, clean, and professional learning
environment.

I take responsibility for my actions.

I protect the spirit of the Professional Standards and Expectations by encouraging others
to uphold its tenets and intervening with those who violate its principles.
What does the code mean?

I treat all individuals with respect and dignity.
o Social expectations include but are not limited to:
 Addressing others with courtesy, sensitivity, and respect.
 Respecting others’ property.
 Contributing to a community in which everyone works together in an
atmosphere free from discrimination.
 Responding appropriately and in a timely manner to all acts of
discrimination.

I strive to set a standard of professional behavior when representing the College and
University at external events.
o Professional expectations include but are not limited to:
 Attending and participating in scheduled events.
 Avoiding over-consumption of alcohol and use of illegal substances.
 Engaging in non-disruptive behavior.
 Accurately representing myself, the College, or the University.

I strive to set a standard of professional behavior in the academic and professional aspects
of my life outside of the classroom.
o Expectations include but are not limited to:
 Attending and participating in scheduled appointments or interviews.
 Accurately representing myself.

I am committed to scholastic honesty and integrity.
o Academic expectations include but are not limited to:
 Doing my own work on tests, quizzes, and homework.
 Using only authorized notes, texts, or other aids during tests or quizzes.
 Denying others to view or copy my work on tests, quizzes, and homework
when not allowed by the course instructor.
 Acknowledging the words and ideas of others in my work by properly
citing and crediting the source of both text and Web materials. Protecting
course codes, graphs, programs, and spreadsheets, or answer keys and
solution manuals by not copying them without the authorization of the
course instructor.
 Collaborating on or discussing with other students projects or assignments
only when specifically permitted by the course instructor.

I respect our College facility by maintaining a safe, clean, and professional learning
environment.
o Expectations include but are not limited to:
 Being attentive in class.
 Being careful not to be disruptive in class or meetings by reading
newspapers, inappropriate talking during classes, receiving phone calls,
etc.
 Being prepared for class.
 Disposing trash in designated containers (e.g., picking up newspapers,
empty food wrappers or drink containers in classrooms or in hallways and
throwing them in trash cans or recycling bins; disposing cigarette stubs in
designated receptables).
 Protecting the Gerdin Business Building and furnishings from deliberate
damage.

 Accurately representing my actions.
 Acknowledging any misconduct.

to uphold its tenets and confronting those who violate its principles.
o Expectations include but are not limited to:
 Reporting academic violations or illegal activities when certain knowledge
of violation is known.
 Intervening to remind others of standards when it would be appropriate to
do so (e.g., reminding others to pick up their trash after class,
communicating standards at club meetings).

I acknowledge that I have thoroughly read through the College of Business Professional
Standards and Expectations, and I agree to follow these standards for behavior as a College of
Business student. I understand that the College of Business is committed to promoting high
ethical and professional standards and it will report any transgressions of these high standards
and expectations to the university Office of Judicial Affairs for official intervention if necessary.
