Network Operations
Junior Systems Engineer 1
Purpose of Position:
To assist the Network Operations Center team (NOC) of the Calvin Information
Technology (CIT) department with network and systems administration.
Classification:
Student wage rate level III
Reports to: Systems Engineers in the NOC
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 Writing programs and scripts to automate tasks in the UNIX environment.
 Developing web-based forms and processes in the UNIX environment.
 Perform systems analysis and maintenance.
 Install and configure network servers.
 Perform server software installation and upgrades.
 Install and configure network devices.
 Other duties as assigned.
All duties and responsibilities will be done under the supervision of the system engineers.
Qualifications:
 Basic knowledge of the UNIX environment (Linux, Solaris, BSD, etc.)
 Basic knowledge of TCP/IP networking
 Basic knowledge of programming and scripting (perl, php, shell, html, etc.)
 Good communication and teamwork skills
 Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail
 Eagerness to learn
 Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
 Ability to work independently with some supervision
 Ability and willingness to lift 40 lbs
 Able to put in 10 or more hours in a normal school week (20 or more hours per
week during the summer)
