This eight-session course, taught by Diane Lolli, presents a study of basic
medical terminology, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining
forms, special endings, plural forms, abbreviations and symbols. This wordbuilding system provides the opportunity to decipher familiar and unfamiliar
words and emphasizes speaking, definition, usage and pronunciation. The
class is interactive and uses flashcards, pronunciation anatomical charts, and
graphs to make learning fun and word retention easy. In addition to attending
classes, students must make a commitment to read assigned material outside
of class, memorize abbreviations and complete written assignments. The
informal atmosphere helps to make this experience exciting and effective.
Remember to consult with your supervisor or manager to ensure that this
course is pertinent for you to perform current or future job responsibilities here
at BIDMC. There is a $35 fee when you pick up your books in Human
Resources.
Please submit your request by noon on Friday, April 5.
To register, e-mail your name, department, position, hospital extension
and manager’s name to htieu@bidmc.harvard.edu.

school credential and to progress to college level studies. The course meets
Mondays and Wednesdays on-site, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Interested employees
will be assessed to determine their abilities in each subject.
To register for an assessment or to get more information on the
program, please contact Laurie Fitzpatrick at (63)2-9410 or

2010 IRS Limits for 401(k) and 403(b) Plans
There are no changes to the Internal Revenue Service limits on 401(k)/403(b)
plans for tax year 2010:

The elective deferral limit will remain at $16,500. If you maximize your
contributions each year, your weekly contribution will be $317.31.

The catch-up limit will remain at $5,500 for employees who are or will
become age 50 during 2010. Your total contribution will be $22,000. If you
maximize your contributions each year, your weekly contribution will be
$423.08

The Highly Compensated Employee (HCE) limit remains at $110,000. An
employee is considered highly compensated by the Internal Revenue
Code (IRC) if she or he earned more than $110,000 in gross
compensation on Dec. 31, 2009. We will continue to have a cap on the
HCE’s 401(k) contributions of 4 percent of 2010 compensation. And you
can still save up to the IRS limits by contributing the remainder into the
403(b) Plan.
You do not need to re-enroll in the plans. If you are currently participating,
your current contribution(s) will continue into the 2010 plan year.
If you wish to change your contribution please contact Fidelity
Investments at 1-800 343-0860 or log onto NetBenefits at
http://www.fidelity.com/atwork.
Note: The IRS limit applies to your combined 401(k) and 403(b) contributions.

weight loss – exercise, nutrition, stress reduction and motivation. The goal of
this program is for participants to make permanent lifestyle changes. The
program consists of weekly lectures on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Healthy Eating to Prevent Diabetes
Healthy eating and an active lifestyle are important for everyone. Changes to
your eating habits and physical activity level can reduce your risk of
developing type II Diabetes. This seminar will focus on how proper nutrition
can help prevent or delay the on-set of Diabetes. You will learn about risk
factors; the Glycemic Index, meal planning, and blood glucose levels. This
seminar will be presented by Michelle Davis, Dietetic Intern, on Thursday,
March 25, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Trustman Boardroom, Stoneman
2. If you are interested in attending, please call the Tanger Be Well
Center at (66)7-4695.
Balancing Work and Family
Juggling the demands of children, home, a partner, work and community can
be overwhelming. This seminar focuses on how to manage these many
important responsibilities. By reducing our stress level, learning how to set
priorities, delegating, and managing time more efficiently, we are able to
achieve a better balance. Topics covered include examining our expectations,
personality dynamics that interfere with reducing our stress and managing our
time. Sponsored by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, this seminar will be held on
Tuesday, March 30, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Rabkin Boardroom,
SCC10. If you are interested in attending please call the Tanger Be Well
Center at (66)7-4695.
