Applications are invited for students to pursue graduate studies (MPhil or PhD) in our laboratory either in human genetics and genomics, or computational and statistical genomics and bioinformatics. Genetics and Genomics (multiple hiring): We are an interdisciplinary laboratory working on identification of susceptibility genes for complex diseases and causal mutations for single gene disorders. Through collaborations with other members in the Faculty of Medicine, we also work on the genomics aspects of cancer. We use whole genome SNP genotyping, whole exome and whole genome sequencing technologies, as well as RNA-seq, etc. to search for meaningful changes for these diseases. Functional characterization on novel findings is also part of our effort, making use of technologies in molecular biology, cell culture, basic protein biochemistry and immunology. Students from biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or genetics background are welcome to apply. Students have to be self-motivated, ambitious, and detail-oriented and committed to make differences in genetics and genomics. Computational genomics and bioinformatics (multiple hiring): Students from computation, statistics and bioinformatics background are also invited to join an interdisciplinary team to work on analysis of genomics data, development of novel tools to analyze such types of data, and development of sophisticated models to try to identify pivotal changes and pathways that are essential for disease development and to link genotypes with disease phenotypes. Our lab contains expertise from both biology and computation background. Located in the Faculty of Medicine, we collaborate closely with clinician scientists as well as statistical geneticists, and have access to clinical samples and rich genomics data, which are essential to the development of cutting edge tools in this rapidly evolving and most exciting field in biology and medicine. Requirement for admission can be found in graduate school webpage: http://www0.hku.hk/gradsch/web/apply/index.htm. All students are provided with monthly studentship at a minimum of HK$13600/month, and outstanding students are also encouraged to apply for Hong Kong PhD Fellowships (HKPF), and University Postgraduate Fellowships (UPF) which provide higher stipend. All students have a chance to attend overseas conferences during their study and HKU provides an excellent environment to interact with internationally renowned experts in different fields and for students to develop academically. Further enquiries can be addressed to yangwl@hkucc.hku.hk and information about the laboratory can also be found at http://www0.hku.hk/paed/ or http://paed.hku.hk/uploadarea/yangwl/html/index.html. The next deadline of application is December 31, 2011 and Dec. 1 for HKPF.
