Job description
Outline of post:
One six month appointment available to start August 2015, two three or six month posts available November 2015. Suitable for middle grade doctors who have completed the membership exams: MRCPCH or Primary FRCA. Covering 6 bedded paediatric Critical
Care Unit.

Departmental Information:
Barts Health (Royal London, Newham & Whipps) Teaching Hospital. Largest acute paediatric service in South East of England. The largest Paediatric Trauma service in
London. Over 110 Paediatric surgical and medical beds. Day case ward. Regional Neonatal
Unit with neonatal surgery. Regional Neonatal Transport Service. Tertiary referral centre for
Paediatric medical specialities (endocrinology, gastroenterology, haematology, oncology and respiratory medicine) and surgical specialities including ENT.
PICU Information:
Brand new dedicated environment of 6 beds opened February 2012. Dedicated consultants,
Lead Nurse, nursing team, pharmacist and therapists. Planned expansion to 10 bedded unit.
Activity / Workload:
35,000 attendance’s/year through a dedicated Paediatric A&E department + In-patient unit for Homerton Hospital (patients requiring >24hr admissions) + Tertiary services
This unit treats a high volume of critically ill children who both present at A+E and the inpatient wards and also are referred for step down care following a stay in paediatric intensive care at another unit. The service treats around 450 patients a year.
Responsibilities and Clinical Training:
8.30 combined anaesthetic/medical ward round
Evening hand-over round
Day to day care of PICU patients
Including CPAP, BiPAP and Ventilated patients
Barts Health NHS Trust: Newham University Hospital, The London Chest Hospital,
The Royal London Hospital, St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital.
Assessment of children on other paediatric wards prior to transfer to unit
Liaison between teams and agencies involved with individual patients
PICANET data entry
Discharge summary writing on discharge from the unit
Other training available:
Opportunities to learn in the Simulator centre
APLS and PLS courses are run within the Trust
RLH has multiple tertiary specialities and sitting in on any of these would be possible
There is weekly membership training
Opportunity to attend anaesthetic lists for further airway management training
(Mandatory for Non-anaesthetists)
Opportunity to have sessions on NICU and adult ITU
Non-Clinical Training and Responsibilities:
Monthly Children’s Service’s Directorate half day Audit incorporating clinical governance.
Monthly critical audit meeting
Rota arrangements:
