Focal Theme
Emerging Frontiers of Anthropology
The emergent global economy of the 21st century is creating an ever greater need for research based
information and pragmatic utilization of anthropological skills, creating new opportunities for applied
anthropologists in diverse situations. Anthropology, since its inception, witnessed the opening up of a
number of new horizons and many sub-fields came into existence. Emphasis has been shifted gradually to
more and more problem oriented issues that stalk human existence at present. This trend is well reflected
in the works of Indian Anthropologists as well.
Anthropological training and teaching needs to be based on sound ethnographic techniques, participatory
methods, and interdisciplinary knowledge in order to accommodate faster-paced work environments and
to disseminate their findings efficiently to a diverse population while satisfying the goal of empowering
and enabling humans around the world to address social, cultural, economic, political and health issues,
along with other vital concerns of various ethnic communities. The emerging trends of anthropology can
be understood from the nature of works they presented in the national and international forum.
The Indian Anthropology Congress: 2016 aims to identify the emerging areas of interest of the
anthropologists, the issues addressed or raised by them from all the sub-disciplines of Anthropology. In
fact the collective commitment and contribution of anthropologists in such Congresses will provide a new
direction for the next generations.
