NHS Lothian University Hospitals Division Department of Laboratory Medicine Pathology Service FULLTIME LOCUM CONSULTANT HISTOPATHOLOGIST WITHIN THE PAN LOTHIAN PATHOLOGY SERVICE 1. Outline of the post This is a fulltime Locum Consultant post in Pathology, available from October 2014, offering the successful candidate the opportunity to work within the histopathology / cytopathology service in one of the leading Departments of Pathology in the United Kingdom. It is a temporary locum post, consequent on the resignation of a consultant. It is full-time (1.0 wte, 10 PA), and based at the Western General Hospital and/or Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) dependent on the subspecialist interests of the successful candidate. Applications from candidates with a subspecialist interest and experience in Gastrointestinal pathology would be particularly welcome but other subspecialist interests could also be accommodated. 2 to 4 TO BE ADDED BY RECRUITMENT 5. Departmental Information Pathology services are currently delivered from 2 sites, the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) and Western General Hospital (WGH). Laboratory Medicine is managed as an integrated service which with Pathology (histopathology and cytopathology) and Forensic Medicine includes Medical Microbiology, Haematology, Biochemistry, Laboratory Reproductive Medicine and Genetics with a single senior management structure. Professor David Harrison is Director of Laboratory Medicine. There are more than 500 WTE members of staff in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and 2.5 million samples are processed each year. The Pathology service has adopted a Specialist Team reporting structure facilitating implementation of national standards and participation in EQA schemes. Overall, the histopathology service reports in excess of 62,000 biopsies and diagnostic cytology specimens along with 75,000 cervical cytology specimens. Below is the current team structure and as will be obvious, many consultants work in more than one team. The Gastrointestinal pathology team delivers services at both WGH and RIE sites. Upper GI pathology including hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology are based at RIE, while lower GI pathology is based at WGH. This reflects the current division or the clinical specialty of gastroenterology within Edinburgh. The Gynaecological pathology team is based primarily at RIE. Details of the Post This is a locum 1.0 wte post. The post holder is based mostly at the Western General Hospital and/or Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and has a principal commitment to the (Upper) Gastrointestinal Pathology Teams. Duties will include reporting of biopsy and resection specimens including where appropriate cancer screening programme cases, and may include participation in related multidisciplinary meetings. The possible involvement with other subspecialty pathology teams will depend on the interests of the successful candidate. The histopathology service in Edinburgh spans both hospitals and the successful candidate may be expected to carry out duties at either hospital site. All consultants are expected to be involved in direct clinical care, CPD and audit, to participate in relevant EQA schemes, and to be available for teaching and involved in research as appropriate. There is also a requirement for the post holder to participate in annual appraisal / revalidation. Multidisciplinary meetings are a key part of direct clinical care. We work in subspecialty teams which have flexibility and are designed to allow individual variation, for example in accruing PAs to take blocks of time of time off service or setting aside a specific time each week for special activities. Workload, using Royal College guidelines, is recorded as a part of reporting biopsies. On call is only necessary for consultants providing forensic cover and transplant services. The department has full accreditation and the post holder will be expected to contribute to ongoing work to maintain this status. Dec 2009 Page 2 of 6 7. Teaching The post holder will be expected to participate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, and other relevant groups. 9. Job Plan The locum job has 6 Programmed Activities, subject to review. In addition Extra Programmed Activities may be offered as part of a separate contract, if service needs dictate. Nine PAs are allocated for Direct Clinical Care, and 1 SPA is available. A job development plan should be agreed before starting in post to reflect personal interest and service needs, and to allow time for discussion with other team members if required to adjust balance of activities.
