CHAMBRE D’HÔTES MAULEVRIER AIZECQ DISCOVERING THE VILLAGE ? Aizecq, on the borders of Poitou and Angoumois, is a village of 314 souls which is part of 5 town- councils associated with Nanteuil-en- Vallée since 1972 The chateau : this noble manor house from the XVIth century underwent numerous restorations and successive transformations without losing for all its charm. It is a private house closed to the public which can, however, be admired from the outside. This feudal pigeon loft, situated 20 meters far from the chateau, is a 7 meters high round tower sheltered by a tiled roof. The parish church of Aizecq was the seat of a Benedictine Priory depending on the Nanteuil-en-Vallée Abbey - It would be built in 1050. St Pierre Aumaitre In the church, you will discover the chapel and the story of Saint Pierre Aumaître, a child of the soil. Born in 1837, he died martyred in Korea and was canonized in 1984* by the Pope. His parents rest in the nearby quite cemetery and his modest native house can be visited. A commemorative statue decorates the square since 2000 and a pilgrimage pays him tribute each year at the beginning of May. The fountain is situated at the crossroads of the road of Barro and the one of Verteuil. Washerwomen's generations filed past this washhouse before the arrival of the tap water! The “ lojhes” It is the name given, in local dialect, to small stone huts. A young association tries to protect and restore these ancient huts, built in the small walls surrounding countryside. You’ll be able to discover some of them during your walks around the village. A torch guided tour of these huts is organized every year in August. Our celebrities Adolphe Pichon, General Secretary under Raymond Poincaré's Republic was born in Aizecq. His daughter married Professor Bernard, well-known over the world for his research work on leukaemia. Member of the “Académie Française” and author of numerous books, he stayed regularly in the family house situated in the center of the village. Died in 2006, he rests in the family vault in the cemetery.
