ICE CONDITION FORECAST 09.02.-18.02.2006.
Within the next 10-day the frost over the Baltic Sea region will weak and the ice formation
will slow down.
At the beginning of the period the moderate south-east wind will cause the ice drifting to
north-west. This will increase the amount of the ice in the north part of the Gulf.
On the fairway Riga-Irbes strait in the region of Kolka the accumulation of compact ridged
drift ice is possible. In the south part of the Gulf the new ice formation will slowly continue.
The fast ice will remain locally along the coast of the Gulf of Riga.
In the second half of the period due to the west, south-west wind the mild Atlantic air will
penetrate to the region of the Baltic Sea. The new ice formation will be interrupted. The ice will
drift eastwards.

Fast ice 30-40 cm thick, further close to very close
drift ice, locally 25-35 thick, to Kihnu.
North part of the Gulf of Riga Fast ice and compact, locally ridged drift ice 20-30 cm
(Estonian archipelago)

Gulf of Riga (northern sea-coast)
Fast ice and very close, locally ridged drift ice 20-30
cm thick.
Gulf of Riga (eastern sea-coast)
Locally 10-20 cm thick fast ice, further close to very
close drift 5-15 cm thick ice.
Gulf of Riga (southern sea-coast)
At the beginning of period open to close drift ice 5-10
cm thick, in middle of period very open to open 5-10
cm thick.
Gulf of Riga (western sea-coast)
At the beginning of the period locally young coastal
ice, further very close to compact, in the north part
ridged pancake ice 10-15 cm thick.
In the second half of the period the amount of drift ice
will decrease.
Irbes Strait
At the beginning of the period very close to compact,
locally ridged drift ice 10-20 cm thick.
In the second half of the period the amount of drift ice
will decrease.
Riga – Kolka fairway
In the south part open to close drift ice 5-10 cm thick.
In the north part very close to compact, locally ridged
pancake ice 10-15 cm thick.
In the second half of the period the amount of drift ice
will decrease.
Irbes Strait – Ventspils fairway
Open to very open drift ice 5-10 cm thick.
Ventspils – Lithuanian sea border Very open <5 cm thick drift new ice. In the second
fairway
half of the period mainly open water.
Baltic Sea – coast of Latvia
Locally young coastal ice, further very open drift ice
<5 cm thick, in the north part 5-10 cm thick.
In the second half of the period the amount of ice will
decrease.
