INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE
The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) is a Flagship University located in Mombasa County, set along the
expansive shores of the beautiful and magnificent Indian Ocean and overlooking the famous Tudor Creek
The University, which boasts of unique architecture depicting the rich historical influences and developments of
the region, has transformed from Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education in 1948; Mombasa Technical Institute in
1966; Mombasa Polytechnic in 1972; Mombasa Polytechnic University College in 2007; and finally its current
status in 2013.
It’s dynamism in managerial and academic leadership has seen this prestigious University offer courses in
certificate, diploma and degree awards in Engineering, Science, Business and Technology.
In order to actuate its vision, and be an active player in realization of the Vision 2030, the following positions are
meant to strengthen the University’s capacity for effective and efficient service delivery.
N: ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICE
N1.1 FINANCE DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Senior Accountant – Grade 13N: REF. NO. TUM/RECR/N1.1/SA/1/2014: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree (Accounting/Finance) and CPA (K) OR equivalent. Must have at least
three (3) years experience at Grade 12 OR any other relevant OR comparable position. Must possess relevant knowledge of
computer applications. Possession of a Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) will be an added advantage.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Finance Officer, shall perform accounting duties as may be assigned.
POSITION: Accountant II – Grade 11N: REF. NO. TUM/RECR/N1.1/AII/1/2014: 2 Posts
REQUIREMENTS: Must EITHER possess a Masters Degree (Accounting/Finance) plus CPA II or its equivalent. Must have at
least three (3) years experience as Senior Assistant Accountant I 10 or comparable position. OR Possess a Bachelor of
Commerce Degree (Accounting/Finance option) and CPA Part III or its equivalent with three (3) years experience as Senior
Assistant Accountant I at Grade 10 or comparable position OR Possess CPA (K) OR equivalent with five (5) years experience
as Senior Assistant Accountant I at Grade 10 or comparable position. Must also be able to use relevant Computer
applications.

an added advantage. Must be able to use relevant Computer applications.
JOB SUMMARY: Performing various accounting assignments and assisting in the completion of various accounting tasks
under the guidance of the Finance Officer.
N1.2 INTERNAL AUDIT DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Assistant Internal Auditor – Grade 8N: REF NO. TUM/RECR/N1.2/AIA/1/2014: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must EITHER possess a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Accounting/Finance option) or its equivalent or
any other acceptable professional accountancy qualification by virtue of which the holder is exempted from Part I of the
Certified Public Accountants (CPA) examination OR Possess CPA Part II Section 4 or equivalent. Must have at least three (3)
years experience as Assistant Internal Auditor II at Grade 7 or comparable position. Must be able to use relevant computer
applications.

JOB SUMMARY: Performing various auditing assignments and assisting in completion of various audit tasks in accordance
with the established guidelines and auditing standards.
N1.3 ACCOMODATION DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Accommodation Manager – Grade 12N: REF NO. TUM/RECR/N1.3/AM/1/2014: 1 Post (READVERTISEMENT)
REQUIRMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree in Institutional Management or relevant area from a recognized Institution
and at least three (3) years experience as Assistant Accommodation Manager at Grade 11 or comparable position.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Dean of Students, shall be responsible for the management of Students Accommodation
Services of the University
POSITION: Accommodation Assistant – Grade 2N: REF NO. TUM/RECR/N1.3/Acc.A/1/2014:3Posts
REQUIRMENTS: Must possess a Certificate of Secondary Education. Must possess training lasting at least six (6) months in
housekeeping OR accommodation services or relevant area from a recognized Institution.
JOB SUMMARY: Performing cleanliness duties at the Halls of Residence and their environs as assigned by the Supervisor.
N1.4 CATERING DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Catering Manager – Grade 12N: REF: NO. TUM/RECR/N1.4/CM/1/2014:1 Post (RE-ADVERTISEMENT)
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree Hospitality Management/Hotel Management or its equivalent from a
recognized Institution. Must have at least three (3) years experience as Assistant Catering Manager at Grade 11 or
comparable position. Must be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Deans of Students), shall be in-charge of managing all student catering services in the
University.
POSITION: Cook II– Grade 4N: REF NO. TUM/RECR/N1.4/CKII/1/2014:1Post
REQUIRMENTS: Must possess a Certificate of Secondary Education. Must possess at least six (6) months course certificate
in Food Production or Food and Beverage Service or relevant area from a recognized Institution. Must have at least three (3)
years experience as Catering Assistant I at Grade 3 OR comparable position.
JOB SUMMARY: Performing kitchen –help duties, food service and cleanliness of catering unit and its environs as instructed
by the Catering Manager.
N1.5 ESTATES MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Environmental Supervisor I – Grade 7N: REF NO. TUM/RECR/N1.5/ES/1/2014:1 Post
REQUIRMENTS: Must EITHER possess Higher Diploma in Ground Maintenance, Landscaping OR Exterior Designing from a
recognized Institution. Must have at least three (3) years experience as Environmental Supervisor II at Grade 6 or
comparable position OR Possess a Diploma in Ground Maintenance, Landscaping or Exterior Designing from a recognized
Institution and at least five (5) years experience at Grade 6 or comparable position.
JOB SUMMARY: Under the guidance of the Estates Manager, supervise all environmental and ground maintenance activities
in the Institution.
POSITION: Assistant Estates Technician III (Welding & Fabrication) – Grade 2N: REF NO.
TUM/RECR/N1.5/AETIII/1/2014:1 Post
REQUIRMENTS: Must possess KCSE Certificate with a mean Grade of D+ plus or its equivalent. Must EITHER possess GTT
III in Welding and Fabrication OR Basic Proficiency Test certificate in Welding & Fabrication. Technician Mate with at least
three (3) years experience and have just attained a GT III in Welding & Fabrication OR Basic Proficiency Test certificate in
Welding & Fabrication will be considered.
JOB SUMMARY: Performing specific tasks and duties in one’s technical area as instructed by the Estates Manager.
N1.6 SECURITY DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Security Officer I – Grade 7N: REF NO. TUM/RECR/N1.6/SOI/1/2014: 3 Posts
REQUIRMENTS: Must EITHER possess a Diploma in Criminology/Forensic Studies or related area from a recognized
institution. Must have at least three (3) years experience as Security Officer II at Grade 6 or comparable position. Must have
worked with any Disciplined Forces of Kenya OR any other reputable security firm. Must possess a clean Discharge
Certificate, Certificate of Good Conduct, First Aid Certificate, Fire Fighting Certificate, Must be Computer Literate. OR have
served as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Disciplined Forces with three (3) years experience as a Security Officer II at
Grade 6 OR comparable position. Must possess a clean Discharge Certificate, Certificate of Good Conduct, First Aid

JOB SUMMARY: Assisting in the supervision of all matters related to security of the University property including staff,

N1.7 CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Public Relations Officer – Grade 11N: REF NO. TUM/RECR/N 1.7/PRO/1/2014:1 Post
REQUIRMENTS: Must possess Masters Degree in Mass Communication/Public Relations/Journalism or related area from a
recognized Institution. Must have at least three (3) years experience in Grade 10 or comparable position. Must be Computer

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Registrar (Administration and Planning), shall be in charge of the Corporate
Communications function of the University.
POSITION: Assistant Public Relations Officer I– Grade 8N: REF. NO. TUM/RECR/N1.7/APRO I /1/2014:1 Post (ONE
YEAR RENEWABLE CONTRACT)
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Bachelors Degree in Public Relations/Mass Communication/ Journalism/Photography or
its equivalent. Must be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Under the guidance of the Public Relations Officer, shall assist in running of the Corporate
Communications function of the University.
N1.8 LEGAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Senior Legal Officer – Grade 12N: REF No. TUM/RECR/N1.8/SLO/1/2014: 1 Post (RE-ADVERTISEMENT)
REQUIREMENTS: Must EITHER possess a Masters Degree in Law and at – least three (3) years experience as Assistant
Legal Officer I at Grade 11 or comparable position. Must be registered with the Law Society of Kenya and an Advocate of the
High Court. Must also be computer literate. OR Possess a Bachelors Degree in Law and at least five (5) years experience as a
Legal Officer at Grade 11 or comparable position. Must be registered with the Law Society of Kenya and an Advocate of the
High Court. Must also be computer literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Vice Chancellor, shall be responsible for all legal matters of the University.
N1.9 STUDENTS WELFARE SERVICES DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Sports and Games Officer – Grade 12N: REF No. TUM/RECR/N1.9/S&GO/1/2014: 1 Post (READVERTISENT)
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree in Physical Education or related area from a recognized institution. Must
have at least three (3) years experience in Grade 11 or comparable position. Must possess advanced coaching certificate in a
relevant area. Must be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Deans of Students, shall be responsible for the management of sports/games & recreation
activities and facilities for students and staff of the University.
POSITION: Office Administrator III – Grade 5N: REF NO. TUM/RECR/N1.9/OA III/1/2014: 1 Post
REQUIRMENTS: Must EITHER possess Diploma in Secretarial Studies from the Kenya National Examination Council
(KNEC) or equivalent qualifications from a recognized Institution OR Possess KCSE Certificate or equivalent, Typewriting III
(60wpm), Office Management III, Business English II, Secretarial Studies II, Commerce II, Shorthand II (90wpm) and
Certificate in Computer Applications (Windows, MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS- Access, Power – Point and Internet) from a
recognized institution.
JOB SUMMARY: Under the guidance of the Dean of Students, manage and provide Secretarial and Office Management
services.
N1.10 MEDICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT

REQUIRMENTS: Must EITHER possess Bachelor Degree OR Higher National Diploma in Pharmacy or related area from a

Degree in Pharmacy from a recognized institution. Must be registered with Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board (KPPB).

Must have at least three (3) years experience as a Senior Administrative Assistant I – In-charge of planning at Grade 11N OR
in comparable position. Must possess relevant professional qualifications and be affiliated to a relevant professional body.
Must be Computer Literate.

Mechanical Engineering (Automotive Option) from a recognized Institution. Must have at least three (3) years experience as

JOB SUMMARY: Assist the Deputy Transport Officer in managing the transport function in the University.

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Certificate in Secondary Education. Must possess a valid driving license Class A, B, C, E
