INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE
The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) is a Public University, set along the expansive shores of the
beautiful and magnificent Indian Ocean and overlooking the famous Tudor Creek, Mombasa.
The University, which boasts of unique architecture depicting the rich historical influences and
developments of the region, transformed from Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education in 1948 to
Mombasa Technical Institute in 1966 and then Mombasa Polytechnic in 1972. In the year 2007, it became
a University College and finally a fully fledged University in January 2013.
It’s dynamism in Managerial and Academic Leadership has seen this prestigious University offer courses
in certificate, diploma and degree awards in Engineering, Science, Business and Technology.

ACADEMIC POSITIONS
A1: FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
A1: 1 DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING
POSITION: Associate Professor – Grade 14A: REF. NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/A1.1/AP/05/2013:1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: PhD in any of the following disciplines: Heavy Current; Power Systems and Machines;
Telecommunications Systems; Mechatronics and Robotics; Electronics; Control & Instrumentation; Renewable Energy
Systems; Communications & Signal Processing Systems. Must have at least four (4) years of teaching and research
experience at a University as a Senior Lecturer/Senior Research Fellow. Must have published at least five (5) papers in
refereed journals OR at least two (2) scholarly books in one’s area of specialization OR four (4) papers and two (2)
chapters in a scholarly books and one innovation in his field since appointment as Senior Lecturer. Must have
successfully supervised at least one (1) PhD student and three (3) Master’s Thesis OR twelve (12) Masters Projects OR
two (2) PhD thesis since last promotions to Senior Lecturer/Senior Research Fellow. Should have demonstrated good
academic leadership to this level and ability to attract funding. Affiliation to an appropriate professional body will be
an added advantage.

A1.2 DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL & AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING
POSITION: Lecturer – Grade 12A REF NO.TUM/HRM/RECR/A1.2/L/05/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENT: PhD in Marine Engineering OR Maritime Education& Training (Marine Engineering
option)plus at least three (3) years of teaching experience at a University as Assistant Lecturer or Research

advantage. ORA Masters Degree in Marine Engineering plus at least five (5) years of teaching experience at a
University as Assistant Lecturer or Research Fellow. Must have published at least three (3) papers in
refereed journals OR presented at least three (3) seminar/workshop papers since appointment as Assistant
Lecturer or Research Fellow. Affiliation to an appropriate professional body will be an added advantage.

A2: FACULTY OF BUSINESS & SOCIAL STUDIES
A2.1 HOSPITALITY & TOURISM DEPARTMENT

REQUIREMENT: PhD in Tourism Management OR Hospitality Management. Must have at least five (5) years

A2.2 MEDIA DEPARTMENT

Communication or related fields. Must have at least five (5) years of teaching experience at a University or

A3.1 MATHEMATICS& PHYSICS DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Senior Lecturer- Grade 13A REF NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/A3.1/AL/05/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: PhD in Electronics and Instrumentation; Renewable Energy; Applied Physics or
Environmental Physics. Must have at least five (5) years teaching experience at a University, of which three
(3) years must have been as a Lecturer. Should have been involved in successful supervision of postgraduate students. Must have published at least three (3) papers in refereed journals OR three (3) chapters
in a scholarly book since appointment as a Lecturer. Must show evidence of continuing research. Publication
of at least one (1) University level book in relevant discipline and evidence of attendance and contribution at
academic related conferences, seminars and workshops shall be an added advantage.

ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS
N1.1 CENTRAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Assistant Senior H/Keeper I– Grade 8N: REF. NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.1/ADMIN/05/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess Bachelors Degree in Institutional Management OR its equivalent from a recognized
Institution. Must also be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Accommodation Manager, shall be expected to assist in the management of various
housekeeping operations in the Students hall of residence and their environs.
POSITION: Administrative Assistant III – Grade 8N: REF. NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.1/ADMIN/05/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must be a holder of a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences/ Business Studies in relevant areas OR
its equivalent. Must also be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Registrar (AP), shall be responsible for general administrative duties and
responsibilities within the Central Services.
N1.2 FINANCE DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Finance Officer – Grade 15N: REF NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.2/05/FO/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess PhD in Accounting/Finance plus CPA (K) or its equivalent. Must have at- least three
(3) years’ experience at Grade 14 or comparable position. OR Possess a Masters Degree (Accounting/Finance) plus
CPA (K) or its equivalent. In addition must have at least five (5) years’ experience at Grade 14 or any other relevant
comparable position. Possession of Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) in both cases will be an added advantage. Must
also be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (AFP), shall be in- charge of all Finance functions of the
University.
N1.3 INTERNAL AUDIT DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Senior Internal Auditor –Grade 13N: REF NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.3/05/SIA/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess Masters Degree (Accounting/Finance) plus CPA (K) or its equivalent. Must also have
at least three (3) years’ experience as Internal Auditor I at Grade 12 or comparable position. Possession of
Computerized Information Systems Audit (CISA) certifications will be an added advantage.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Vice Chancellor, shall be in- charge of Internal Audit functions of the University.
POSITION: Internal Auditor I – Grade 12N: REF NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.3/05/IA/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess Masters Degree (Accounting/Finance) plus CPA (K) or its equivalent and at – least (3)
years’ experience as Internal Auditor II at Grade 11 or comparable position. OR Possess Bachelors Degree
(Accounting/ Finance) and CPA (K) or its equivalent and at – least five (5) years as Internal Auditor II at Grade 11 or

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Senior Internal Auditor, Shall be ensuring effective and efficient operations of the
Auditing function of the University.

N1.4 ACCOMMODATION DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Accommodation Manager – Grade 12N: REF NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.4/05/AM/2013:1 Post
REQUIRMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree in Institutional Management or relevant area from a recognized
Institution and at least three (3) years’ experience as Assistant Accommodation Manager at Grade 11 or comparable
position.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Registrar (AP), shall be responsible for the management of Students
Accommodation Services of the University
N1.5 ESTATES DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Estates Manager – Grade 12N: REF NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.5/05/EM/2013: 1 Post
REQUIRMENTS: Must Possess a Masters Degree in a relevant field and at – least three (3) years’ experience as Deputy
Estates Manager at Grade 11 or comparable position. Must be registered with a relevant Professional Body. Must also
be Computer Literate. OR Possess a Bachelors Degree in relevant field from a recognized Institution and at – least five
(5) years’ experience as Deputy Estates Manager at Grade 11 or comparable position. Must be registered with a
relevant Professional Body and be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Registrar (AP), shall be responsible for the administration and maintenance of
University property including land, buildings, furniture and fittings and equipments.
N1.6 REGISTRAR (AA) OFFICE
POSITION: Deputy Registrar (AA) – Grade 14N: REF NO. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.6/05/DR (AA)/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a PhD in Social Sciences/Business Studies and at – least three (3) years’ experience
as Senior Assistant Registrar at Grade 13 or comparable position. Must possess relevant professional qualifications.
Must also be affiliated to a relevant professional body. Must be computer literate. OR Possess a Masters Degree in
Social Sciences/ Business Studies and at least seven (7) years’ experience as Senior Assistant Registrar at Grade 13 or
comparable position. Must possess relevant professional qualifications. Must also be affiliated to a relevant
professional body. Must be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Registrar (Academic Affairs), shall coordinate admissions, examinations,
programmes and training activities in Academic Division.
POSITION: Assistant Registrar (Industrial Liaison) (AA) – Grade 12N: REF NO.

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree in Social Sciences/ Business Studies in relevant area or its

N1.8 LEGAL DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Senior Legal Officer – Grade 12N: REF No. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.8/05/SLO/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree in Law and at – least three (3) years’ experience as Assistant Legal
Officer I at Grade 11 or comparable position. Must be registered with the Law Society of Kenya and an Advocate of the
High Court. Must also be computer literate. OR Possess a Bachelors Degree in Law and at least five (5) years’
experience as a Legal Officer at Grade 11 or comparable position. Must be registered with the Law Society of Kenya
and an Advocate of the High Court. Must also be computer literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Vice Chancellor, shall be responsible for all Legal Matter of the University.
N1.9 LIBRARY DEPARTMENT
POSITION: University Librarian – Grade 15N: REF No. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.9/05/UL/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: PhD in Library and Information Studies or equivalent from a recognized institution and at least five
(5) years’ experience in Grade 14 or comparable position in a large academic library. Must be a member of a relevant
professional body. Must have evidence of two scholarly publications or a chapter in a scholarly book since last
promotion. Must also be Computer Literate OR Master Degree in Library and Information Studies or its equivalent
from a recognized institution with at least seven (7) years’ experience as a Deputy University Librarian in Grade 14 in
a large academic institution. Must have evidence of independent Research in Information Science and must have
published one scholarly paper or a chapter in a scholarly book.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (ARE), shall be in – charge of the University Library.

N1.10 CATERING DEPARTMENT

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Master Degree in relevant field or its equivalent from a recognized Institution. Must
have at least three (3) years’ experience as Assistant Catering Manager at Grade 11 or comparable position. Must be

University.
N1.11 SUPPLY CHAIN SERVICE DEPARTMENT

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree with a bias in Procurement/ Supplies Management. Must have at –

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Master Degree in Counseling and at least three (3) years’ experience as Senior
Assistant Students Counselor III at Grade 11 or comparable position. Must be Computer Literate.
JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Deans of Students, shall be responsible for the Management of the Students
Guidance & Counseling activities in the University
POSITION: Sports and Games Officer – Grade 12N: REF No. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.12/05/SGO/2013: 1 Post
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Master Degree in Physical Education or related area from a recognized institution.

JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Deans of Students, shall be responsible for the management of sports/games &
recreation activities and facilities for students and staff of the University.
N1.14 HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT
POSITION: Deputy Human Resource Manager – Grade 13N: REF No. TUM/HRM/RECR/N1.14/05/DHRM/2013: 1

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management/Business Studies in relevant
area or its equivalent. Must have at-least five (5) years’ experience as Senior Human Resource Officer at Grade 12 or
comparable position. Must possess relevant professional qualifications and be affiliated to a relevant professional
body. Must be computer literate. Those with a PhD Degree in a related field will have an added advantage.
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to the Registrar (AP), shall be responsible for the management of the HRM function in
the University.
