Factors that affect Weather & Climate
There are many factors that affect weather and climate. For example, the closer an area is to the
equator, the warmer it will be. This is because the sun is directly over the equator. Next, altitude
can also affect an area’s weather and climate. It is much colder at the top of the mountain than at
the bottom. In addition, hurricanes and thunderstorms tend to happen near areas of water, while
tornadoes tend to happen in dry open plains. Other examples that influence our daily weather and
our region’s climate include pollution, warm fronts, and cold fronts,

2. How would the Bronx weather change if it had a lower line of latitude closer to the
equator? Why?

Small Local Climates
The average temperature in a city is higher by several degrees than it is
in surrounding areas. Heavy traffic in cities and the energy used warms the air
and raises average temperatures. Skyscrapers in cities may act as mountains
and change patterns of rainfall as well as add more air pollution. Air pollution,
dust from car exhausts and smokestacks all add particles to the air. These
extra particles cause temperature to increase and more rain to fall over large cities.
4. Why are cities warmer and rainier than suburbs?

Global Warming and Local Climates
Climate has changed many times during Earth’s history. These
changes were mostly due to natural causes. Today, human activities
may be changing Earth’s climate. Increased air pollution may cause
temperatures around the world to increase. This pattern of
increased temperature is called global warming. Global warming
could cause the polar ice caps to melt and sea levels to rise. Places
like NYC could be almost covered if this ice melted.
5.. What is global warming?
