Seasons Greetings from the Environment Department 2008
Remember the 3 R’s Reduce Reuse and
Recycle this Christmas
BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Be Aware! – Make a shopping list so you’re not tempted
to buy things you don’t really need or want!
Food For Thought - Look for locally produced or fair
trade labels. Avoid food that is over-packaged. Take
your own bag to the supermarket.
Give Your Time - Offer to cook your friends a meal or
help them decorate instead of giving a present.
Perfect Presents – Buy vouchers not stuff. Treat
someone to an evening class, a night out, manicures,
massages or buy a subscription or membership to a
magazine or a charity.
Cool Cards - If you have a computer, send an e-card
instead of a paper one or make your own from paper
and textile scraps you find around the house.
Simple is Stylish – Try alternative wrappings like
newspaper, pieces of old material and string or ribbon
that can be reused. If you want to use new paper,
choose recycled where possible. Keep taking your own
reusable bags when shopping. Don't accept paper or
plastic bags that you don't need.
Ideal Ideas - Other great gift ideas include Home
Composters available from Limerick City Council €35,
energy saving light bulbs, trees, solar powered radios
and torches, homemade food, avoid gifts which require
batteries, or purchase a battery recharger or check
with development agencies and give gifts of aid for
development work overseas.
ON THE DAY
Eat, drink and be merry!
AFTER CHRISTMAS
Use your dry recyclable (opti bag or blue bin) collection
to recycle cardboard, plastic bottles, newspapers,
magazines, food cans, drink cans or use selected Bring
Banks around the city.
