Henrietta Perdue Memorial Lecture Series Stone Church of Willow Glen (Presbyterian USA) 1937 Lincoln Avenue, San Jose November 9 - 10, 2012 Walter Brueggemann William Marcellus McPheelers Professor of Old Testament Emeritus Columbia Theological Seminary Practicing Neighborhood amid Empire Dr. Brueggemann, world-renown Old Testament scholar and prolific author, explores the dominant narrative of power, performance, and production in the Old Testament and in our society. Friday Evening Lecture (7:30 to 9 pm) -- Realism amid Ideology The notion of “being chosen” deceived ancient Israel into thinking it was immune to the vagaries of history and to moral accountability. The prophetic alternative told the truth about historical reality that could not be covered over by ideology First Saturday Morning Lecture (9 am) -- Grief amid Denial The ideology of chosenness encouraged denial among the opinion makers in ancient Israel and the way in which the prophets summoned Israel to grief about its real losses that could no longer be denied. Second Saturday Morning Lecture (11 am) -- Hope amid Despair The prophetic accent on loss was correct: Jerusalem was destroyed and its leading citizens were displaced; there was a general sinking into despair. The prophets countered that despair with hope that declared the capacity of God to create new futures “out of nothing.” Walter Brueggemann Dr. Brueggemann is the world's leading interpreter of the Old Testament. He has authored more than 58 books, hundreds of articles, and several commentaries on books of the Bible. His most recent works include The Practice of Prophetic Imagination: Preaching an Emancipating Word; Praying the Psalms: Engaging Scripture and the Life of the Spirit; Journey to the Common Good; and An Unsettling God: The Heart of the Hebrew Bible. “He has devoted his life to a passionate exploration of Old Testament theology, with an emphasis on the relation between the Old Testament and the Christian canonical works, the origins and history of Christian doctrine, and the dynamics of Jewish-Christian interactions."
