Descendants of Peter ALLAN
Peter ALLAN [75], son of Unknown and Unknown, was born in 1761 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian
and died in 1851 in Whitburn, Co.Durham aged 90.
General Notes: Peter was Gamekeeper to Sir Hedworth Williamson of Whitburn Hall. Peterand
Jane lived in Whitburn as pensioners on the Baronet's Bounty. Peterwas originally a Shoemaker
from Gladsmuir, East Lothian. He kept bees,was a crack shot and conversant with all parts of the
bible.
On 1851 Census he was described as 'maintenant'.
Peter married Jane KENLEY [76] [MRIN: 39] about Dec 1798 in Probably Whitburn, daughter of
Archibald KENLEY [77] and Unknown. Jane was born in 1761 in Tranent, East Lothian and died in
1851 in Whitburn, Co.Durham aged 90. They had ten children: Peter, Jane, Archibald, Thirdson,
John, Fifthson, Thomas, Seconddaughter, Margaret and Jane.
General Notes: Jane was aged 90 on the 1851 census and was living as a maintenant withher
husband.
Jane was 38 at the birth of her first son Peter and 50 at birth of herlast child Jane.
The dates of birth and deaths of Peter and Janes children were taken fromthe Parish Records at
Whitburn Parish Church, which is were their firstson Peter (also known as 'The Hermit') his wife
Elizabeth and son Williamare buried.
Peter ALLAN [78] was born on 6 Sep 1799, was christened on 14 May 1803 in Whitburn Parish
Church, Co Durham, died on 31 Aug 1850 in Whitburn, Co.Durham aged 50, and was buried in
Whitburn Parish Church. The cause of his death was Died of a broken heart.
General Notes: aka The Hermit
Started in early life in service with his father working for Sir Hedworth Williamson later
becoming a gamekeeper to the Marquess of Londonderry who eventually became Viscount
Castlereagh.
After that he married, became a publican at Whitburn and varied his occupation by working as
a foreman at excavation works, taking part in the quarrying of stone from the rocks for the
Marsden Lime Kiln, and in 1835 in the construction of the Sunderland Dock.
This gave him the idea of making a home on the shores of Marsden Bay and providing
accommodation and refreshments on the spot for the picnic parties and visitors.
PETER was know as Peter the 'Hermit' due to his excavation of Marsden Grotto making it into a
home for his wife and 8 children.
There is a book written about him entitled 'The Story of Marsden and Peter Allan' written by a
former West Boldon headmaster Mr Alan C Robinson.
Medical Notes: In the book written about Peter it is said that he more or less gave up when he
had to give up the Grotto because of Government pressure and it is said that he died of a
broken heart

died on 7 May 1870 in Marsden, Co.Durham aged 68, and was buried in Whitburn Parish Church.
They had eight children: Jane, William, Thomas Colley, Peter, Elizabeth Marsden, John
George, Archibald and Mary-Ann.
General Notes: Elizabeth assisted her husband Peter in the Grotto making tea and cakesfor the
visitors. After Peter died she continued working at the Grottoand on 1851 census she describes
herself as a Publican. On 1861 censusshe describes herself as a Licensed Victualler.

additions and improvements. On 1861 census he was still living at the Grotto with his
mother. He remained at the Grotto until his death at the age of 46 and is buried with his
parents Peter and Elizabeth. Was there something wrong with William ie was he retarded
or had he an illness.

He enlisted into the 1st Artillery, Company 1 Regular, United States Armyand fought in the
American Civil War he was shot in the left armrendering it useless.
Traveled from North America to England and back leaving his children whoapparently would
wear burlap bags on their feet because they couldn'tafford shoes which seemed strange as
from the passenger lists for thattime coming in through Ellis Island Archibald didn't travel
cheap.
During one of his visits to England he died on 31st December 1906 ofBronchitis in
Sunderland. When he died the address was 6 Eden Vale,Sunderland, England.
His death was certified by a James Chalmers MB and a A M Bell was presentat the time.
His death was registered on 2nd January 1907 in the Sub-District ofSunderland West in the
County Borough of Sunderland Entry No 318 page 64in the Register Book of Deaths the
Register at the time was Thomas Barlow.
He was known to have smuggled in tobacco and other things to avoid exciseduty.

Passenger lists for the Vancouver, Canada area unearthed an Allanshipping Line which
seemed to be bringing a lot of orphans to America foradoption although have no evidence of
a connection to the Allan family ofMarsden.
Article in Ancestry.com newsletter included information about EllisIsland and an Archibald
was found to have travelled on 2 dates.
1. Arrival in Ellis Island on 11th September 1901 on ship Oceanic fromport of Liverpool
stating residence of Sunderland and destination as NewHampshire.
2. Arrival in Ellis Island on 22nd June 1905 on ship Teutonic from portof Liverpool no
residence stated but destination was Glen Bartlett NewHampshire.
New Hampshire is where his wife Rebecca lived and died.
He married Rebecca in New Brunswick, Canada. Rebecca filed for a pensionin February
1907.
Archibald married Rebecca Jane HADDOCK [126] [MRIN: 56] on 2 Feb 1868, daughter of
James HADDOCK [444] and Margaret DUNKNOW [445]. Rebecca was born on 11 Sep 1846 in
St Stephens New Brunswick, Canada and died on 26 Jan 1918 in Glen, New Hampshire,

There was some tension in the family when Alfred's sister died leaving Alfie as the
sole beneficiary in her will assuming that her Mother Annie would have
predeceased her. Unfortunately this was not the case as Annie had gone to
Colchester to live with Rachael after the death of Rachael's first husband Bert.
Alfie received all the money left by Rachael and Annie became very bitter towards
Alfie.

Eulogy at Funeral

Dad
To everything there is a season, a time to be born
and a time to die. We did not think this Autumn
would be dad's last season. For he was a man always
doing something. He had his garden in tip top condition all year long, no blade of
grass was out of place, no shrub allowed to get untidy. Indeed such was his passion
that if he came round and found that we had already mowed our lawn and cut our
hedges he was genuinely disappointed. We agreed it was best to leave the job to
an expert.
Dad came from a large family, there were eleven of them with dad being the
youngest and as the junior he was given all the jobs to do. His mum sent him out
to do the messages not only for the family but for neighbours as well. He was the
message boy and one time when he felt that he was being put upon, he told them
he was leaving home. When he arrived back after an errand he was sent on, the
rest of the family had his bags packed and asked him where he would be going.
Needless to say he chose to stay.
His sense of family, his reliability, diligence, conscientiousness and hard work
meant that he was able to progress from his apprenticeship as a butcher to shop
manager, inspector and finally factory manager. When he was made redundant
after 40 years of service with the Co-Op, his track record meant that he was
quickly re-employed.
Being active was dad's passion. When he was young he was into cycling, body
building and keep- fit. He also helped his brother Alfie prepare and race
scramblers. His idea of relaxation in his 20's was to hop onto his bicycle and cycle
to Derry and back. When Mona and he got a caravan at Cranfield, it was an
occasion to spend time with other members of the family- Betty, Sammy, Joyce,
Leonard, Anne, Andrew, Heather and Brian. His physical stamina remained with
him throughout his 70's and into his 80's - he regularly went swimming in Avoniel
every Thursday where he would meet Robert and other friends.
Dad and Mum first saw each other on the beach at Rockport and eventually met at
a dance in the Gala. It was then he told his friends that Mona was the girl he was
going to marry. Lynn and Lisa were in the hands of caring parents and Adam and
Hector were in the hands of caring grandparents.
Dad's philosophy was to keep going, nothing was ever too much trouble whether it
was giving a talk about what Strandtown Primary was like when he was young to
Adam's class, lending his car if ours didn't work or helping Lisa to decorate her
apartment in Donaghadee. He had started to help Lisa, Gavin and Hector in their
new home in Bangor but his time was devotedly spent looking after Mona after her
operation. Everything he touched was left pristine and he continually weeded out
clutter. This was a source of annoyance to me as I am not the tidiest of
individuals and I hoard everything. He called round one day, found me in the
garage and asked if I had any wood to repair his garden seat I couldn't resist
smiling as I reached into a pile of offcuts and handed him what he required. He
simply smiled back- a moment of mutual understanding.
Each member of the family will have their own memories of dad and as the
Autumn leaves fall he has left this garden and found comfort in God's green
pastures.

Cecil Allan, one of Colchester United's elder statesmen, has died.
Believed to be the oldest surviving U's player until his death, the former Layer Road
defender passed away peacefully in his sleep, aged 88 years.
The youngest of nine brothers, orphaned by the time he was seven-years-old, Allan, a
Northern Ireland international left-back, joined the U's from Chelsea in 1938 for the
then princely sum of £2,000.
He went on to make 16 appearances for the U's, spanning the Second World War
years, before moving on in 1946 to captain and coach Colchester Casuals where
budding ex-U's and Newcastle United centre-forward Vic Keeble and former West Ham
United defender John Bond were learning their trade.
A promising young player with League of Ireland club Cliftonville before moving to
England to play for Chelsea for three seasons, Allan won international honours at both
amateur and professional levels, winning his one full cap for Northern Ireland as an
amateur against England at Winsdor Park in October 1935.
Unable to receive cash payment for his appearance, Allan used the £10 left for him at
a Belfast jewellers to buy a ring on which he had inscribed the same crest that was
emblazoned on his shirt.
He also made several representative appearances for the League of Ireland.
The most notable was a 3-1 win over the English League at Blackpool's Bloomfield
Road, a venue he was to re-visit 60 years later in 1993 still clutching his cherished
original matchday programme.
His career was seriously hampered by a nasty cartilage injury during his first match
for Chelsea which required 22 stitches and left him without the full range of
movement in the leg concerned.
Apprenticed at Harland and Woolf's shipyard in his native Belfast, the young Allan
followed in his father's footsteps before turning to football.
His dad helped to fit out the first class cabins on the luxury liner Titanic, sailing on
the ship from Belfast to Southampton before its ill-fated maiden voyage.
Married to his late wife Gwen, an accomplised Colchester swimmer and diving
champion to Olympic standard, in 1944, Allan returned to his sheet metal work roots
in the town where he was a county bowler and football manager of the now defunct
Arclight company in the town.
He was also the pianist for the Arclight dance band for 20 years.
His son Raymond was also an associate schoolboy footballer with the U's, signed by
former manager Neil Franklin, while his daughter Maureen was a swimmer like her
mother.
