JOB DESCRIPTION
1. GENERAL INFORMATION
JOB TITLE:
Macmillan Ambulatory Cancer Care Pharmacist (2 year project post)
GRADE:
F
SALARY SCALE: £37,763 to £ 41,004 per annum plus £2,676 Inner London Weighting Allowance, pro rata
HOURS OF DUTY: 39 hours per week (negotiable), including one Saturday morning every six weeks
SUPERANNUATION:
6% of annual salary (optional)
ANNUAL LEAVE:
32 days per annum, pro rata

2. LINE RELATIONSHIPS
The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Head of Pharmaceutical Services. The Chief Pharmacist and the
Oncology Nurse Consultant will jointly manage the post. Objectives and appraisals will
be set jointly.

4. JOB SUMMARY
Based at The Whittington Hospital, and working within the inter disciplinary cancer and palliative care team, in particular
the Consultant Nurse for cancer care and Lead pharmacist, the post holder will be responsible for the development and
evaluation of ambulatory cancer care services both within and across the acute and community sectors, managing, and
supporting patients under going treatment and supportive care interventions for cancer. It is anticipated that the post
holder, as part of the project post, will register for a higher research degree (MPhil/Ph.D.)
They will:
 Act as a member of the multidisciplinary supplementary prescribing team
 Develop chemotherapy clinics within the acute trust and community
 To work in conjunction with purchasers and users of ambulatory care to develop patient & carer centered service
developments
 To develop user group to inform development and evaluation of project
 Manage and ensure supply of the chemotherapy and supportive care drugs
 Develop and carry out the research being undertaken within the project
 Measure quality outcomes for the patient and staff
 Participate in education and training of nursing and pharmacy staff
 Develop expertise in this area and act as a resource to other professionals and hospitals.
 Participate in an evaluation of the post.
5. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To facilitate the development of an ambulatory cancer services at the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust; this will include
evaluating current models of service provision, and development of ambulatory clinics within the Whittington hospital
and local communities
2. To work within the existing pharmacy team, supporting oncology pharmacy services at the Whittington Hospital
3. To act as a member of the multidisciplinary supplementary prescribing team
4. Liase with oncology pharmacy and production teams ensuring the supply of the chemotherapy and supportive care
drugs
5. Develop new procedures and protocols that required for accurate and safe supply of chemotherapy.
6. Develop and carry out the research being undertaken within the project.
7. Act as co-ordinator for pharmaceutical input into oncology clinical research and audit and to ensure that research in
this area in performed in line with Good Clinical trials Practice.
8. Measure quality outcomes for the patient and staff
9. To co-ordinate clinical governance initiatives relating to medicines management and use within ambulatory cancer
treatment.
10. Participate in education and training of nursing, medical and pharmacy staff
11. Develop expertise in this area and act as a resource to other professionals and hospitals.
12. To participate in the North London Cancer Network Chemotherapy Board and act as pharmacy representative on
other tumour boards as required by the network.
13. Participate in an evaluation of the post.
14. To support the oncology pharmacist and contribute to departmental appraisal and development programs.
15. When appropriate, to liase with community services pharmacists and other providers of primary care concerning the
continuing treatment of patients discharged from the hospital
16. To participate in the Bank Holiday rota.
17. To follow all established procedures and maintain all relevant records.
18. To carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Chief Pharmacist or Oncology Nurse consultant.

9. NO SMOKING POLICY
We are a no-smoking hospital that does not allow smoking at work except in designated areas.
10. WORKING SCHEDULE
Your working schedule is laid down by your Head of Department and the right to vary this as necessary is reserved.
11. METHOD OF PAYMENT
Payment of salary / wages is made into a bank or building society account by direct bank system. Details of a bank or
building society account will be required on the first day at work. There is no facility for any other form of payment.
10. SECURITY
