NCI Specific Information:
Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: The NCI expects
to make up to a total of 10 awards with funding of approximately $8
million in total costs each year for the two year period FY2009 and
FY2010.
Budget and Project Period: Budgets for direct costs of up to $500,000
per year and project duration of up to two years may be requested, for a
maximum of $1,000,000 direct costs over the two-year period.
Additionally, indirect costs may be requested.
Eligible Institutions: U.S. domestic public or private institutions,
including universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories and NCI-designated
Cancer Centers, seeking to enhance their capacity to conduct translational
cancer research.
Number of applications: NCI will accept only one application per
institution for this initiative
Eligible new faculty candidates: Early stage investigators (ESI) who are
physician scientists committed to a career in translational cancer research;
or basic science PhD ESI’s, including quantitative scientists, committed to
a career working with clinicians in the design and implementation of
translational cancer research. For the purpose of this FOA, translational
research is basic science research conducted by a physician scientist ESI
that is subsequently moved into clinical applications; or conducted by a
PhD basic science ESI that is subsequently moved into clinical applications
in partnership with clinicians/clinician researchers.
Other information: Within 90 days following the issuance of the NoA,
awardees must provide to the Program Director named in the NoA, the
names and biosketches of the new faculty hired and their mentors.
Highest priority will be given to applications from institutions making a
commitment of 2 years of additional support beyond the P30 at the same
level of support as provided by the P30.

(NHLBI)
NHLBI Specific Information:
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) offers the P30 Core
Center Grant program to encourage institutions involved in biomedical,
clinical, epidemiologic, and behavioral research to enhance their capacity
to advance the understanding and treatment of cardiovascular, pulmonary,
and blood diseases and of sleep disorders by providing support for the
hiring of new tenure-track faculty.
Eligibility: Major institutional components within Universities such as
Schools of Medicine, Bioengineering, Nursing, or Public Health are eligible.
Number of applications: Only one application per institution will be
accepted.

NIAAA Specific Information
The P30 faculty recruitment grants are available to any U.S. academic or
medical department for the recruitment of faculty members with a focus
on an issue in alcohol research.
Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIAAA
expects to make between 7 and 10 awards during FY 2009, with total
funding of approximately $6 million over the two-year period of FY 2009
and 2010.
Budget and Project Period: Budgets for direct costs of up to $300,000
per year and project duration of up to two years may be requested, for a
maximum of $600,000 direct costs over a two-year project period.
Eligibility: Major institutional components or Academic Departments
within Universities such as Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, or
Public Health are eligible.
Number of applications: Only one application per Academic Department
will be accepted.

NIAMS Specific Information
The NIAMS offers the P30 Core Center Grant program to enhance capacity
in all areas relevant to the NIAMS mission by providing support for the
hiring of new tenure-track faculty. Applications for the support of basic,
translational and clinical research should specify the department(s) or

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB)
offers the P30 Core Center Grant program to encourage US training
institutions to enhance their capacity to conduct research in biomedical
research fields relevant to the NIBIB Strategic Plan. Applicants may find

NIDCD will only accept applications in support of new faculty recruits who
are conducting basic, clinical or epidemiological research in the
communication sciences of hearing, balance, language, speech, voice,
smell and taste.
Eligibility: NIDCD will accept only one application from each separate
organizational component of a University (e.g., one application each from
the medical school, dental school, or school of public health).
Budget and Project Period: NIDCD will allow the support of more than
one new faculty recruit within the same organizational component of a
University (e.g., the medical or dental school) but the total requested
amount can not exceed $500,000 (total of salary and other start-up costs)
per year, for a maximum of $1,000,000 direct costs over a two-year
project period.

expects to make between 4 and 7 awards during FY 2009, with total

NIDCD requires that any faculty members hired under this initiative
receive joint appointment(s) with other academic unit(s) and/or
department at the applicant institution, allowing new faculty to access
University-wide research resources and core facilities, and to serve as
mentors for graduate programs affiliated with other academic unit(s).
Commitment of institutional resources and continuity of support is
expected after the expiration of the award. Highest program priority will be
given to applications that commit at least four additional years of salary
support and research resources after the end of the award.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) offers

institutions to enhance their capacity to conduct research in social,

NIGMS Specific Information
The NIGMS will consider applications from institutions to enhance capacity
in all areas relevant to the NIGMS mission. Applications should specify the
department(s) or center(s) in which this P30 capacity building will be
focused. Highest priority will be given to institutions that provide evidence
that the award will support the resumption of a pre-existing search that
was suspended due to economic factors.
Budget and Project Period. Budgets for direct costs of up to $250,000
per year and project duration of up to two years may be requested.
Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: The NIGMS
expects to make up to 20 awards in FY 2009, with total funding of
approximately $10 million over the two year period of FY 2009 and 2010.
Other information: NIGMS expects institutions to conduct open searches
and seek faculty applications from women, members of racial and ethnic
groups that are underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research,
individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged
backgrounds. This aspect of the proposed faculty recruitment strategy will
be considered in funding decisions. Applications should describe plans for
outreach and recruitment, as well as the recruitment process (e.g., the
number of applications received, demographics of the applicant pool,
interviews scheduled, etc.). Highest priority will be given to applications
confirming an institutional commitment to provide two or more additional
years of support after the end of the award. In addition, the NIGMS will

NIMH-Specific Information
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) offers the P30 Core Center
Grant Program to encourage institutions to enhance their capacity to
conduct research in fields that contribute to accomplishing the priorities of
the NIMH Strategic Plan. NIMH encourages applications from institutions
that seek to hire early-stage investigators in tenure-track (or equivalent)
research positions at the assistant professor level.
Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: The NIMH
expects to make between 3 and 6 awards during FY 2009, with total
funding of approximately $5 million over the two-year period of FY 2009
and FY 2010.
Budget and Project Period: Budgets for direct costs of up to $500,000
per year and project duration of up to two years may be requested, for a
maximum of $1 million direct costs over a two-year project period.
Eligibility: All U.S. institutions are eligible to apply.
Number of Applications: An institution may submit no more than one
application targeted to hiring clinician-scientists (including MD/PhD
physician-scientists) as tenure-track (or equivalent) faculty and no more

capacity to conduct research. The goal of this funding opportunity is to
encourage U.S. schools of nursing to augment and enhance their capacity
to conduct research in health promotion and disease prevention, improving
quality of life, eliminating health disparities, end of life and bio-behavioral
methods relevant to the NINR Strategic Plan.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
offers the P30 Core Center Grant program to encourage US research
institutions to enhance interdisciplinary research in their CAM and/or
integrative medicine programs by providing start-up packages for
promising, newly-independent faculty with outstanding potential for a
career in integrative medicine research. Priority will be given to new hires
likely to focus on research areas prioritized by NCCAM. For information on
