Teaching as Inquiry SMART Goal Setting Name: Ashley Lynch Date: 7/1/11 Class Level: Visual Arts Teaching as Inquiry Focus: My teaching inquiry focus is to integrate Smart Board technology into the Visual Arts Classroom in order to further student knowledge and engagement. Specific I will need to learn all the fundamentals of using a Smart Board as well as learning how to build a successful lesson that incorporates Smart Board technology. Once I have learned the basics of using the Smart Board, I will begin implementing Smart Board technology into all of my lessons and incorporate interactive visual art smart board activities to further student knowledge and engagement. I will need to start off my year by focusing on the Smart Board Manual, learning from staff and students and exploring on my own to gain experience. The resources I will include a variety of tools and websites that will allow me to improve my knowledge of the smart board and interactive capabilities. I will incorporate art websites that are both informational and interactive. Websites and tools such as GoogleArtProject, ‘An Art Teachers Guide to the Internet’ and various smart board downloads will be a great resource to improve my focus on integrating Smart Board technology in the Visual Arts. As I further my explorations throughout the year, I will continually improve on the knowledge and interactive capabilities of the Smart Board. Measurable I will keep a reflection journal/binder that allows me to reflect on the lessons I teach that use Smart Board technology. In each reflection I will address the successes and challenges of each lesson as well as what I have learned and next steps. I would like to have the smart board used during each lesson/unit in order to improve student engagement, interaction and knowledge of the visual arts. I want the students to be able to gain more knowledge and insight into the visual arts by using the Smart Board technologies, whether it is in an interactive way, or by visiting an art gallery website. I want the Smart Board to be an engaging part of their learning experience and for them to understand how technology and art can be connected. Action Plan 1. I will read the Smart Board Manual, learn from my colleagues and explore on my own to get a basic understanding of how to operate a Smart Board and its features. 2. I will explore and navigate the internet to find Smart Board Resources, tools and websites that I can directly implement into my classroom. What do you need to learn and why? How will you integrate your new learning into students learning? What will you need? What do you want the outcome to be? A specific description here will make planning and implementing easier. How will you know if you’ve succeeded? What are your personal success criteria? What are the success criteria for students? What key steps will you take? 3. I will strive to incorporate the Smart Board into each lesson and continuously improve on my knowledge, skills and experience. Realistic I will need to have: A Smart Board Manual Time to explore and practice using the Smart Board so that I can have a basic working knowledge on how to use it. Colleague Support/IT Support A variety of websites, tools and resources to implement into my lessons. Don’t plan things that will be difficult to achieve. Take into account the age of your students, the availability of equipment and your skills. What equipment and knowledge will you need? What will you need help with? Timeframe 1. 2. I am not quite sure of the date and time yet for the hands-on learning and planning, but it will be sometime before school starts, either end of July or the beginning of August. I want to start using the Smart Board as soon as I feel comfortable that I have a basic working knowledge of it. I am hoping the second week of school. 3. Different students will be at different levels with Smart Board knowledge and experience, so I will start out teaching/reviewing basic Smart Board tasks. I will allow more experienced students to be the teacher and teach those who are just beginning, myself included. 4. Because my goal is to incorporate Smart Board technology into the Visual Arts, there really is no completion date. I will continually use it throughout the year. 5. I am going to continuously reflect and assess my work throughout the year as I learn how to use and incorporate the Smart Board into my lesson plans. 6. I plan on presenting my goal and outcome to others at the January meeting date for the Middle Level Institute. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Date and time of 1:1 hands-on learning and planning session with the ICT Facilitator When will you introduce and model the learning experience to your students? What is your plan for scaffolding and ‘just in time help? What is the completion date for students? What date will you reflect and assess the work? When will you be presenting your goal and the outcome to others (your colleagues at a staff meeting; to students at assembly?)
