MPMA’s Online Jobbank - Internship position opening Paid Museum Internship beginning January 2013 Education Division, Museum of Texas Tech University Job Description: Museum Education Intern – Davies Gallery Job description: Davies Gallery Graduate Intern, Museum Education (paid, fulltime with benefits) Accountability: The Davies Gallery Graduate Intern reports to the Curator of Education Description: Development of educational materials and programming for the Davies Gallery of Southwest Indian Art. The Museum of Texas Tech University supports full-time positions for graduate-level students and recent graduates of master’s degree programs who intend to pursue careers in fields of museums and heritage management. The internship program provides practical training and experience in museum administration and non-profit practices at an American Association of Museums accredited large university museum. The Education Division of the Museum supports this full-time position for graduatelevel students, and/or most recent graduates of masters degree programs, who intend to pursue careers in the fields of museum education, interpretation, and non-formal education. Purpose of Internship: This internship will provide practical experience in developing educational materials and programming for use in a re-designed gallery of Native American art from the Southwest. The Museum holds collections and exhibitions related to art, history, natural science, and natural history, and this internship will focus upon the Davies Gallery of Native American art. The selected candidate for this internship will participate in research, writing, and compilation of educational materials and programming that will reflect thoughtful and sensitive consideration of the cultures portrayed in the Davies Gallery. Terms and Length of Service: This full-time internship is for a 1-year (12 months) period. Starting date is January 1, 2013 with some flexibility within January. Selected intern must be committed to the entire 12 months of the project. Compensation: The pay is $1700 per month (before deductions) for 12 months of work ($20,400 annual) paid at the hourly rate of $9.81. The compensation for this internship includes benefits. University credit is available when applicable. Some professional development funds also are available to attend conferences and workshops. 1 Responsibilities and Duties: Under direction of the Curator of Education, the graduate intern will: Participate in meetings with staff and other interns regarding exhibit and programming development Research current practices, standards and procedures for museum programming that will accurately, and with sensitivity, interpret Native American art and culture; Contribute to the writing and presentation of programming and other educational materials that will help museum visitors to access and better understand the Native American objects and artists represented in the Davies Gallery. Qualifications: Knowledge of/experience with Native American cultures of the American Southwest Familiarity with concepts of museum interpretation Familiarity with informal learning. Outstanding research and writing abilities Familiarity with learning needs of diverse ages Outstanding time management skills Ability to be self-motivated, and display initiative Ability to work well, both independently and with others Ability to take direction and positive correction Knowledge of research practices Outstanding organizational skills Ability to work successfully within time constraints, and meet deadlines Personal and professional maturity Physical Requirements: This internship requires a moderate level of activity.
