Policies and Regulations
1. The designated Transfer Station for the duly
permitted residents of the Town of Medfield is
located at 123 North Meadows Road. A sticker is
required.

The Transfer Station area is for the disposal of
refuse generated only in the Town of Medfield, or
in accordance with any reciprocal emergency
management agreement with another municipality.
3.
The Superintendent of Public Works shall act as
agent for the Board of Selectmen for administration
of the Transfer Station.

The Attendant in Charge shall be obeyed at all
times and materials shall be deposited in
accordance with his/her instructions or in the
absence of specific instructions as directed by
signs. Refuse shall be cleanly and completely
deposited at the designated locations unless
directed otherwise by the Attendant in Charge. The
Attendant in Charge is authorized to require
reasonable and satisfactory evidence concerning the
origin of refuse contained in any vehicle. The
Attendant is further authorized upon an individual’s
failure to satisfactorily establish the origin of
refuse, to prohibit the disposal in the transfer
station. The Attendant in Charge is also authorized
to request reasonable and satisfactory evidence that
a vehicle is registered or principally garaged in
Medfield.

Any and all refuse deposited in the Transfer Station
area becomes the property of the Town of
Medfield. Commercial salvage rights may be
issued by the Board of Selectmen for such fees and
under such conditions that it may determine.
Items of refuse may be removed by individuals
subject to the approval of the Attendant in Charge.
Small amounts of building materials may be
deposited at the Transfer Station by homeowners
with a special permit issued by the Superintendent
of Public Works.
Areas shall be maintained to receive recyclables
including (when markets are available), but not
limited to, old newsprint, aluminum, glass, metal
cans, plastics, returnable plastic, cardboard, and
aluminum beverage containers, used clothing, white
goods, yard waste.

No person shall set fire to any material in the
Transfer Station area and no person shall deposit
any ashes that are not completely extinguished.
10. No person shall discharge a firearm within the
Transfer Station area.
11. Household refuse shall be defined as the following:
ordinary inorganic solid waste such as paper, cans,
bottles, glass, crockery, cooking utensils, food
containers, furniture, toys, appliances, rags,
clothing, rubbish from household repairs, and
organic materials such as yard trimmings, leaves,
dead vegetation, and food waste.
Recycling Requirements
Used Clothing: serviceable used clothing may be
deposited in the containers provided by charitable
organizations.
White Goods: all metal appliances that are bulky in size
(i.e. stoves, washers, dryers, residential freezers,
dishwashers, hot water heaters, etc.) shall be deposited
in the designated white goods pile. Please remove doors
from freezers and refrigerators.
Yard Waste: yard waste, leaves, grass, and garden
clipping shall be deposited in the designated areas. All
brush, branches and limbs eight (8) inches or less in
diameter, will be accepted at the Transfer Station year
round from residents only. NO comercial vehicles.
Waste Oil: used crankcase motor oil, containing no
contaminants other than those associated with normal
use in a motor vehicle engine, shall be collected only on
specially designated Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Days held in the spring and fall.
Swap Area: A Medfield Transfer Station sticker is
required to use the swap area. Long term parking is
NOT allowed. The swap area is open from 9AM to 3PM
during the days the Transfer Station is open May thru
October. The swap area is available to drop off and
pick up reusable household goods. Due to limited
parking spaces, users are limited to 15 minutes of
parking.

Violations

Any person violating the Policies and Regulations and
/or the Recycling Requirements or depositing prohibited
items at the Transfer Station shall be subject to a fine of
the following: first offense $25.00, second offense
$50.00, and third and subsequent offenses $100.00. The
Town of Medfield reserves the right to refuse to allow
disposal of refuse in the Town of Medfield Transfer
Station when or if an individual fails to adhere to the
spirit or letter of these regulations.
Instructions for Obtaining a MTS Permit
Residential Permit
1. Obtain an MTS sticker application form from the
Department of Public Works at the Town House or
on line at www.town.medfield.net, and complete
the first four lines of the application.
2.
Bring the completed MTS application to the DPW
Office along with the vehicle registration or excise
tax receipt for the vehicle that will carry the sticker.
The Town of Medfield stipulates that no Transfer
Station sticker be issued unless a vehicle is
principally garaged in Medfield and the Excise Tax
for that vehicle is paid to the Town of Medfield.

If a sticker application meets the stated conditions a
permit/sticker will be issued.
4.
The Transfer Station sticker must be permanently
affixed to the lower corner of the driver’s side front
windshield.
5.
Leased cars or cars not registered in Medfield must
list Medfield as place of principal garaging on the
vehicle’s insurance certificate.
Special Permit
1. If an application does not meet the conditions for a
residential permit a person may request a Special
Permit be issued by sending a letter to the Board of
Selectmen requesting the Special Permit with an
explanation as to why it should be issued. The
Board of Selectmen will determine if a special
permit is warranted. Examples of special permit
conditions include:
Vehicle is owned/licensed by the Federal
or State government.
Non-profit, tax exempt organization such
as a church whose congregation is
responsible for trash disposal.

Policies and Regulations
Residents should be aware that the Medfield
Transfer Station recycling requirements and
hours of operation are subject to change.
Adopted: July 28, 1999
Effective: October 1, 1999
Any changes will be posted with the local cable
television station, the Medfield Press, the
Hometown Weekly, and on the Town of
Medfield Web Site.
