Library Technician, Access Services Department
(Student Assistants, Stacks Control, and Circulation Desk Supervisor)
Hours: 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Under the direction of Access Services Librarian (Circulation, Reserve, Interlibrary Loan):
I.
Supervisor, Library Student Assistants/Access Services Department
A. Hires all student assistants for the Access Services Department.
B. Coordinates assignments of student assistants with other full-time departmental staff
who will train students in their particular areas: interlibrary Loan; Overdues and
Billing; evening and weekend duties, including closing the building; filing and
miscellaneous duties for the Department Head; and other duties as assigned.
C. Trains and supervises all students working on the Circulation/Reserve Desk and
students doing stacks maintenance. Closely coordinates Circulation/Reserve student
assistant training with the two Night/Weekend Supervisors.
D. Prepares correspondence and designs manuals and forms for students assistants
working on the Circulation/Reserve Desk and doing stack maintenance. Coordinates
with other members of the Department in preparing a manual for all duties, processes,
and procedures in the Access Services Department.
II.
Access Services Desk Supervisor
A. Responsible for operations of the Access Services Desk, including scheduling. This
also includes overall supervision of students working at the desk. Directly supervises
the operations of the Access Services Desk on a regularly scheduled basis in rotation
with other Access Services staff. Closely coordinates Circulation/Reserve student
assistant desk assignments.
B. Performs operations of the Access Services desk in the absence of students; provides
users with Circulation, Reserve, and Interlibrary Loan assistance on a regularly
scheduled basis in conjunction with other Access Services staff.
C. Creates and edits bibliographic and item records for circulation in CONSULS.
D. Collects fines and clears patron records as necessary.
III. Stacks Supervisor
A. Plans and supervises all stack maintenance, including shifting of materials in the stacks.
Trains and supervises students in the shelving, maintenance, and shifting of materials in
the stacks. Prepares regular assignments for shelving for students.
B. Responsible for all signage in the stacks, including numbering of shelf ranges and
identification of classification numbers located in each range. Either prepares signs or
has signs done by others.
C. Notifies all library staff via e-mail when major shifts in the stacks occurs.
D. Coordinates with staff member responsible for signs to produce maps of locations of
materials in the stacks and notices of location changes of materials in the stacks. These
information sheets should be available at the Circulation desk at all times and at various
locations in the stacks.
E. Consults with the Head of Public Services on major stack maintenance problems.
IV. Interlibrary Loan Assistance
A. Assists the Access Services Librarian in all aspects of the interlibrary loan operations
and procedures on a regular basis. Has primary responsibility when the ILL Supervisor
is absent.
V. Public copy machines and printers
A. Assists patrons with the operations of public copy machines and public printers, in
conjunction with other staff.
VI. Performs general library duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Ability to provide effective library services for students, faculty, and the general public. Ability
and desire to perform public services work with diverse students, faculty, and members of the
general public. Ability to work well under stress, with courtesy and calmness. Ability to work
within a team environment with other library staff. Ability to delegate appropriate work to
students. Ability to exercise independent judgment. Ability to use computers accurately and
efficiently. Dependability. Attention to detail. Flexibility. Willingness to work nights and
weekends in the absence of a night supervisor. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
