Purpose
This unit standard is for people working as corrections officers in a prison and
covers the management of cultural needs of Māori prisoners.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
–
understand Māori cultural needs;
–
actively manage the Māori cultural needs component of sentence
management plans;
–
refer prisoners to appropriate support people;
–
implement cultural plans for Māori prisoners; and
–
evaluate the implementation of cultural plans for Māori prisoners.

Reference to terms, procedures and specifications in this unit standard may include
documented procedures and specifications relevant to the workplace in which
assessment is carried out.

All work practices shall meet documented enterprise quality management
requirements, including the documentation of activities, events and decisions.

Assessment should be against the documented national policies and procedures and
prison specific procedures.

Understand Māori cultural needs.

1.1
The prisoner’s cultural needs are identified.

The prisoner’s life experience is identified and described.

family or whānau origins, history, and structure; community and
recreational involvement; influence of economic, political, and
socio-cultural structures, including ideological, kinship, and
religious structures, education and training; paid and unpaid work
experience.
Assessment identifies gaps and deficiencies in cultural knowledge.

2.1
The environment that is established is conducive to a working relationship for
the case officer and prisoner.

Refer prisoners to appropriate support people.
Performance criteria
3.1
Plan identifies action to meet assessed cultural needs.
3.2
Plan is developed in consultation with the prisoner and identifies significant
people.
Range
whānau, hapū, iwi, kaumātua, chaplain, cultural advisors, support
agencies.
3.3
Plan is agreed to and signed off by the prisoner in accordance with established
procedures.
3.4
Recorded information is complete, concise, accurate, and legible.
3.5
Information is recorded in the required format and filed within scheduled
timeframe, according to industry specifications.
Element 4
Implement cultural plans for Māori prisoners.
Performance criteria
4.1
Plan is implemented in accordance with the prisoner, identified individuals and
agencies, and other prison staff within agreed timeframe and conditions.
4.2
Plan is implemented in accordance with established enterprise procedures,
protocols and legal requirements.

Element 5
Evaluate the implementation of cultural plans for Māori prisoners.
Performance criteria
5.1
Implementation of cultural plan is evaluated against planned objectives at
intervals stated in the plan, the validity of the plan is determined, and any
opportunities and needs for modification are identified.
5.2
Evaluation methods are appropriate to the nature of the plan, and the type of
evaluation information sought.
5.3
Plan modifications are made in accordance with the outcome of the evaluation
and enterprise standards.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
