IELTS Speaking Lesson Plan. Objective: To familiarize students with the 2nd part of the interview; to give students practice in doing the 2 minute talk. In the 2nd part of the IELTS speaking test, interviewees/or test taking students are given a topic and have to produce a 2 minute talk on that topic. The interviewer/examiner selects the topic and gives it to the interviewee/or test taking students. The examiner then tells the student that they have 1 minute in which to prepare for this 2 minute talk. The examiner tells the test taking student that they may make some notes for 1 minute before giving the talk. After the 1 minute preparation time is up the examiner tells the test taking student to begin talking. The difficult part is to know when the 2 minutes is up. If the test taking student stops before the 2 minutes are up he or she can have their test score negatively affected. So in this lesson students will be given practice to prepare the 2 minute talk and also they will have practice in speaking it out. Part 1. The teacher will give the students the Topic: Describe a journey you went on. You should include in your answer: Where you went on your journey Why you went to this particular place What did you do and with whom Whether you enjoyed your journey you went on 1 The students will then be given 1 minute to prepare this 2 minute talk. The students will then be put into pairs and given letters A and B. Student A will act as the examiner who will time student B. Student A will tell student B to begin and will then time student B. As soon as the 2 minutes are up student A will then tell student B to stop. The roles will then be reversed with student B timing student A. Part 2. The teacher will present a 2 minute model answer. The teacher will give this 2 minute talk as a presentation to the students. The students will time the teacher for 2 minutes. (The teacher will have to practice this carefully before the class so that the students will be given an accurate example of a 2 minute talk.) Part 3. The students will compare their 2 minute answer to the model answer and discuss with their partner where their weaknesses were. The teacher will give an evaluation rubric for the 2 minute talk and students will evaluate their peers on how they performed according to the rubric. Part 4. For a homework assignment students will be given a topic to prepare a 2 minute talk on. Students will be told that they will have to give this talk in an examination role play situation in the next class. Students will be told to practice the talk at home to be sure 2 that they can speak for 2 minutes. Topic for the homework assignment: Describe a book that has had a major influence on you. You should include in your answer: What the book’s title was and who wrote it How you first heard of it What the book was about Why it has played such an important part in your life 3
