IELTS Speaking Test - Introduction IELTS Speaking Test: Details • The IELTS Speaking test lasts between 11-14 minutes. • It is conducted face-to-face with a real examiner. • It includes 3 parts. • It is scored from 0-9, with 9 being the best possible result. • The examiner will mark you in 4 areas: Grammatical Range and Accuracy; Lexical Resource; Pronunciation; Fluency and Coherence. • You will receive a final score based on the individual scores for each part. (e.g. Fluency: 7 and Grammar: 7 plus Lexical Resource: 6 and Pronunciation: 6 = Final score of 6.5) • The final score you receive is based on the IELTS Band Descriptors, which explain the requirements for each score in each skill. Part 1: • Personal Questions. Common topics include your home, your hometown and details about your study/job. • 4-5 minutes. • Talk in first person (I, my). • Typical answer length is 2-3 sentences. • Examiner will get his first impression of your English level, and make general judgement. Part 2: • Known as the “Long Turn.” • 1 minute to prepare, 2 minutes to speak. • The examiner will provide the question book, a whiteboard and marker pen to make notes. • The examiner will focus on each area of your English to make an overall judgement. Talk in third person (he, she, most people). • The examiner will ask follow-up questions based on your answer. • Be prepared to talk in more detail about topics.
