Donning and Removing Sterile Gloves

Purposes:
1. To enable the nurse to handle sterile objects freely.
2. To prevent client at risk to infection.
Assessment:
1. Obtain package of sterile gloves in appropriate size.
2. Review date of expiration.
3. Assess glove for any moisturing.
Equipment: Package of sterile gloves.
Procedure:

Hand washing.
Peel apart sides of outer package of glove wrapper.
Lay inner package on clean, dry, flat surface.
Open package, keeping gloves on inside surface of wrapper.
Identify right and left gloves.
Start by applying glove to dominant hand. With
Thumb and first two fingers of non dominant hand, grasp edge of cuff of
glove of dominant hand, touching only inside surface.
8. Carefully pull glove over dominant hand, ensuring cuff does not roll up wrist.
9. With gloved dominant hand, slip fingers underneath second glove’s cuff to
pick it up.
10. Carefully pull second glove over non dominant hand, and do not allow gloved
hand to touch any Part of exposed non dominant hand.
11. When both gloves are on, interlock fingers of both hands to secure gloves in
position, being careful to touch only sterile sides.
Removing sterile gloves:

Without touching wrist, grasp outside of one cuff with other gloved hand.
Pull glove off, turning it inside out.
Discard in receptacle.
Tuck fingers of bare hand inside remaining glove cuff. Peel glove off, inside
out.
5. Discard in receptacle.
6. Wash hands.

Establishing and Maintaining a Sterile Field
Purpose:
To maintain the sterility of supplies and equipment.
Assessment:
1. Ensure the pakage is clean and dry.
2. Check the sterilization expiration dates on the pakage.
3. Check for any indication that it has been opened.
To open a wrapped package on a surface:
Procedure:
1. Place the package in the center of the work area.
2. Open the top of flap away from you ( to prevent the nurse reached directly to
sterile area subsequently).
3. Pinch the first flap on the out side of the wrapper between the thumb and index.
4. Touch only out side the wrapperto maintaian sterility of the inside wrapper.
5. Repeat for the side flaps by using the right hand for the right flap and left hand for
the left flap.
To open commercially prepared package
1. If the flap of the package has unsealed corner, hold container in one hand and pull
back of the flap with the other hand.
2. If the package has partially sealed edge, grasp both sides of the edge and pull
parts gently.

Establish a sterile field by using a drape.

Open the package containing drape.
With one hand pluck the corner of the drape that is folded.
Left the drape out of the cover and allow opening freely with out touching.
Discard the cover.
With the other hand carefully pick up another corner of the drape.
Lay the drape on the clean and dry surface.
To Add commercially Package Supplies to sterile field
1. Open each package as previously described.
2. Hold the package 15 cm above the field and allow the content to drop the on the
field.
To add sterile solution to sterile bowel
1. Before pouring any liquid read the label to make sure you have the correct
solution.
2. Remove the cap from the bottle.
3. Hold the bottle of the fluid at a height of 10 to 15 cm over bowel.
4. Pour the solution gently to avoid splashing the liquid.
5. Replace the cap if it used again and provide date and time of the opening
according to the agencies policies.
Donning and Removing Mask and Gown
Purposes:
To prevent spread of microorganism from nurse to client.
To prevent spread of microorganism from client to nurse.
Donning mask:

Wash hands.
Pick up the mask by its upper ties.
Place the mask over the bridge of the nose.
Tie the upper strings at the top of the back of the head or slip the loop over the
ears.

Applying a Sterile Gown:

Apply cap, face mask, eyewear, and foot covers.
Perform surgical hand washing and dry hands.
Have circulating nurse open pack containing sterile gown.
Pick up gown at neckline without touching outside of gown.
Hold gown at arm’s length; allow it to unfold by itself.
Insert each hand through armholes simultaneously.
Have circulating nurse bring gown over shoulders, leaving sleeves covering
hands.
8. Have circulating nurse tie back of gown at neck and waist.
Removing gown:

Wash hands.
Untie neck tie and let gown fall forward off shoulders.
Slide arm out of gown, working from inside.
Holding gown away from your body.
Fold contaminated side of gown toward in side.
Discard in appropriate receptacle
