Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome to the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year. My name is Mr. Kevin Gain and I will
be your son/daughter’s technology education instructor this semester. I have put together
wonderful courses to keep the students interested and have a lot of fun.
I’ve been employed at Grafton High School for 14 years as the Wood Processes, Residential
Construction, Mechanical Design, and Architectural Design course instructor. My main goal is to
prepare students for the real world by using machinery, programs, and techniques industry uses.
This will keep my students one step ahead of others.
Your son or daughter has received a syllabus with the course content and what will be expected
of them throughout the semester. My main area of concern in the past has been student
communication with their parent(s)/guardian(s) regarding the course. Many students may go
home and discuss how fun the course is and what they are building or drawing in lab but may not
mention homework, tests, lab fees or their behavior. This is where parent/guardian and teacher
communication is important. If you just want to discuss your child’s progress or have concerns
with the course, do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.
One of the most common parent concerns throughout the woodworking course are the lab fees.
The course description booklet tells the student and parent/guardian what the fees will be but it’s
ultimately up to the student or parent due to the different prices in material. For example, if your
child made an oak shelf and another student made the same shelf but used mahogany, your child
would be paying a substantially less lab fee. Parents/guardians need to be aware some students
will be close to $100.00 and others will be around $30.00 for the semester. This year students
will be pricing and paying for material before a project can be started.
Thank you in advance for being a part of your child’s education at Grafton High School. You are
an important part of your child’s success.
Sincerely,
Kevin J. Gain
