The San Diego Psychoanalytic Center (SDPC)
provides training programs for the comprehensive
education and clinical training in adult
psychoanalysis, and in child and adolescent
psychoanalysis. There is also an Academic
Associate Program for the scholastic study of
psychoanalysis that does not include clinical
training.
SDPC is a member of the American psychoanalytic
Association, which is a regional organization of the
International Psychoanalytic Association.
Adult Psychoanalytic Training
The Curriculum strives for scholarly achievement,
personal growth, and the development of clinical
competence in practicing psychoanalysis and
psychodynamic psychotherapy. While certain
minimal requirements must be met, the education
of a psychoanalyst depends on a tripartite model
and the realization of a favorable balance among
the three basic components of psychoanalytic
education: a personal analysis conducted by a
Training Analyst, a four-year curriculum of
didactic seminars, supervised clinical experience
and a continuous case conference until graduation.
Requirements Admission
Eligibility for Training: All applicants must
possess a license to practice in California at the
time clinical training begins and must have been
trained at an accredited school. Those eligible to
apply are: Doctors of Medicine or Osteopathic
Medicine who are in or have completed a
psychiatry residence program. Mental health
professionals who have completed a doctoral
degree; and mental health professionals with a
clinical Master’s degree who have completed at
least two eligible, additional post-doctoral years of
didactic and clinical training. Under certain
circumstances, a waiver of the above standards may
be possible. A waiver is not required for
participation in the Academic Associate Program.
This is a non-clinical program for academicians
whose work and interests would be served by the
systematic study of psychoanalytic theory.
Suitability for Training: Selection for
psychoanalytic training requires the applicant to
have mature character and ethical values. No
applicant is ever excluded on the basis of age, race,
ethnic background, religious affiliation or sexual
orientation.
Child-Adolescent Analytic
Training
Eligibility for admission to the Child and
Adolescent Training Program requires that the
applicant be either a student in the good standing in
the SDPC Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program,
a graduate of the SDPC Adult Psychoanalytic
Training Program, or a graduate of a
psychoanalytic training program at another
accredited institute of the American Psychoanalytic
Association. As in the Adult Psychoanalytic
Training Program, clinical training to become a
psychoanalyst for children and adolescents is based
on a tripartite model that includes: didactic
seminars, a personal analysis with a Training
Analyst, and the supervised analysis of children
and adolescents.
Class Schedules
The next class for the Adult Analytic Program will
begin in September 2011. Classes meet on
Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 to 7:00 or 7:30
pm. Occasional seminars are held on Saturday
mornings. There are three terms: Fall Term from
September to December, Winter Term from
January to March; and Spring Term from April to
May. Seminars for the program in Child and
Adolescent analysis require at least three years to
complete. Any additional seminars are scheduled
one evening a month from September through
June.
Accreditation and Continuing
Education Credit
SDPC has been recognized as an accredited
psychoanalytic institute by the American
Psychoanalytic Association since 1977 and is
currently accredited through the American
Psychoanalytic Association. SDPC is also
accredited and approved by the California Medical
Association and the Institute for Medical Quality to
provide continuing medical education for
physicians. SDPC is also recognized as a
continuing education provider approved by the
Board of Registered Nurses, Provider No. CEP
4940, and by the Board of Behavioral Sciences,
Provider No. PCE794. The California
Psychological Association recognizes the
continuing education credits under the California
Medical Association’s status as an approved
provider. It is therefore possible for candidates to
accrue continuing education credits for attending
training seminars that meet the State requirements
to provide continuing education credits for MD’s,
PhD’s, LCSW’s, MSW’s, and MFT’s.
