Analytic Work With A Silently Suffering Pre-Adolescent Masochistic Boy
Presented by: Ellen Helman, M.S.W.
Ms. Helman will explore the challenges she faced trying to engage her patient (an inhibited and socially isolated
pre-adolescent boy) in an analytic process. She will show how she and her patient began to develop a language
for what holds him back academically, socially and in the transference. She will also discuss her efforts to
understand the varying meanings of talking about video games in the analysis. The presentation will be
followed by a discussion of the analytic meaning(s) of the material. Working with parents is also addressed.
Participants are child analysts, therapists, candidates and trainees with a common interest in understanding the
inner world of children and methods to therapeutically impact development and to facilitate change.
Educational Objectives:
-Participants will gain specific understandings of the challenges of working with a more passive preadolescent
boy with masochistic patterns.
-Participants will identify 2 aspects of transference/countertransference reactions that arise with the treatment of
more passive, masochistic individuals and be able to identify these dynamics when occurring in their patients.
-Participants will identify critical areas relevant to the building and maintenance of a treatment alliance with the
parents of a child entering analytic work.
