FOUNDATION COURSE IN CBT (St Patricks Hospital and Trinity College Dublin) Background In the past, St Patrick’s Hospital Dublin has run a very well received Foundation Course in CBT. The course did not run in 2007 but is restarting in a modified form in October 2008. The original course, which was a 5 day course, will now be extended to a year programme, offering a broader and more comprehensive introduction to cognitive behavioural psychotherapy (CBT). The new foundation course will now be affiliated to Trinity College Dublin (TCD). The course is mainly aimed at mental health professionals or equivalent, with an interest in CBT. The course will: 1) function as the first year of a proposed four year cognitive behavioural psychotherapy programme culminating in an MSc from TCD. 2) offer a comprehensive introduction to CBT principles for clinicians who want to understand and use CBT principles in their day to day clinical roles, without becoming accredited cognitive behavioural psychotherapists 3) offer the a comprehensive grounding in CBT principles for clinicians with an interest in pursuing a CBT clinical qualification and accreditation in the future Who can apply? Any mental health workers or equivalent with an interest in CBT but lack formal training or experience can apply. The course will be ideal for psychiatrists, psychiatric registrars, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, counsellors and those with training and experience in the human sciences, with no prior training in CBT. The curriculum The curriculum will be broad and will provide strong foundations for development as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist and prepare the trainee for a more in-depth CBT clinical training. On completing the course, the trainee will be able to confidently apply CBT principles in their normal work or be in a good position to start to take on clients as part of a clinical course. Some of the subjects covered will include CBT theory, understanding models of specific disorder and hypothesis driven interventions for treating them, self-practice/self-reflection and cognitive models of ‘self’, understanding and practice of application of specific techniques and the therapeutic relationship in CBT. Duration of course The course will run on Thursday each week, for 21 weeks from 30th October 2008 to 4th June 2009. It will consist of 3, 7 week terms. Venue The course will be run in the Teaching Centre at St Patrick’s Hospital from 9 – 5 on each week.
