ECC (Thailand) Teacher
Training Centre
Enabling teachers worldwide
ECC (Thailand) English and Computer College.
ECC (Thailand) is the largest private language school in Thailand, with a network of branches in Bangkok and all
over Thailand, from Chiang Mai in the North to Yala in the South. It's also the most active private language school
and runs a wide variety of courses from general conversation to specialized test preparation. Our students range in
age from young children to retirement age adult learners, and in ability from absolute beginners to advanced.
Innovation and Development
The Experience
The Teacher Training Centre of ECC (Thailand) was
established in 1988 with the aim of improving the
quality of in-house teaching and to provide preservice and in-service training for other native and
non-native speaker teachers in Thailand.
The Teacher Training Centre was accredited in 1990
to run the then CTEFLA now the Certificate in
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
(CELTA) courses. In 2003 we held the first YL
Extension to CELTA course in Thailand.
In 2005 a second teacher training centre was opened
in Phuket and in 2006 a third centre was opened in
Chiang Mai.
The Training Courses
The training centre runs a variety of teacher training
courses. Apart from the Cambridge courses, the
centre runs a pre-service TESOL course, Teaching
English to Young Learners and Teaching Business
English short courses all accredited by the Ministry of
Education in Thailand. All courses are offered in
Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. However, off-site
courses may be held by arrangement.
Every year hundreds of English teachers come to
ECC from around the world to improve their teaching
skills. Studying with teachers from all over the world
will give you exposure to stimulating exchanges of
ideas and the chance to learn from your colleagues
as well as the trainers.
Our Training Centres offer a variety of locations.
Bangkok: an exciting central location in one of the
most dynamic cities in Asia with plenty of social
facilities to enjoy.
Chiang Mai: ‘the rose of the north’. Cool mountain air
and Lanna culture.
Phuket: a tropical island paradise with easy access to
some of the best beaches in Thailand.
The Trainers
All teacher training courses are run by our talented,
experienced and highly qualified teacher trainers,
who amongst them have over 40 years of English
language teaching experience on 5 continents.

Cambridge Certificate in
Teaching English to Speakers
of Other Languages (CELTA)
General Information
Introduction
Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is run in over
120 centres world-wide and is widely regarded as the
most prestigious TEFL qualification. It is recognised
internationally.
Aims
The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of
Other Languages (CELTA) is an introductory course
for candidates who have little or no previous English
language teaching experience. It may also be
suitable for candidates with some experience but little
previous training.
During the course, candidates develop familiarity with
the principles of effective teaching and acquire a
range of practical skills for teaching English to adult
learners. The course includes teaching practice,
observation of experienced teachers in the classroom
and completion of a range of practically focused
written assignments.
Entry requirements for candidates
Applicants must:
1. be a least 18. It is generally recommended that
candidates should be aged 20 or over, but
candidates aged between 18 –20 can be accepted at
the centre’s discretion
2. have an awareness of language and a
competence in English, both written and spoken, that
enables you to undertake the course and prepare for
teaching a range of levels
3. have the potential to develop the necessary skills
to become effective teachers and to successfully
complete the written assignments and the
assessment of practice teaching
Candidates should normally have, as a minimum
entry requirement, a standard of education equivalent
to that required for entry into higher education. We
may at our discretion, accept applicants who do not
have formal qualifications at this level if screening
indicates that you would be likely to complete the
course successfully. Applicants in this category
would be interviewed.
Centres also have to satisfy themselves that the
course is suitable for all applicants in terms of their
experience, background, and their career plans.
In addition all applicants must complete a preinterview task and must usually attend an interview.
The admission procedure is designed to safeguard
applicants' interests. The application challenges you
and shows you the areas you'll be involved in during
the course, and also helps the centre to accept only
those that we think can successfully complete the
course. If you wish to apply for a course, print the
application form and send it by post or email with the
pre-interview task to our training department.

Course content
The course is very intensive and concentrates on the
practical rather than the theoretical with a significant
amount of teaching practice. The course is divided
into 4 main areas:
Methodology Input i.e. techniques and strategies for
teaching
Course fee
The course fee is US$1,600 making ECC one of the
cheapest places in the world to become a qualified
ESL Teacher.
The fee includes the Cambridge ESOL assessment
fee. Fees are subject to alteration. The fee for the
course reflects the high tutor-trainee ratio and the
fact that the course requires international moderation
and controls.
Language Awareness i.e. grammar and phonology
Supervised and observed Teaching Practice,
teaching English to two groups of different level
learners.
Guidelines for further professional development after
the course.
If you want to spend some time teaching in Thailand
after the course, why not sign up for our train then
teach program (appendix f). If you teach at ECC for 1
year after completing the course, we'll give you
US$800 back. That means you’re getting your
CELTA for just US$800.
Selection Criteria
ECC cannot enter into correspondence or discussion
concerning the reasons for an interview or place on
the course not having been offered.
Mode of study
This is a very intensive full-time programme over 4
weeks. Class size is kept to a maximum of 6 trainees
per tutor. Currently there are 5 accredited tutors at
this centre. Each course is assessed by a
representative of Cambridge ESOL. Trainees will be
expected to spend at least 3 hours per evening on
lesson preparation, homework, research, reading and
longer written assignments. Observation of
experienced teachers is also included in the
programme.
All tutors working on the Cambridge course
collaborate on the internal assessments and
decisions are unanimous.
In all matters relating to selection and assessment
the decision of the Director of Teacher Training is
final.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find accommodation near
ECC?
Yes, there are a variety of different types of
accommodation within walking distance of both
centres, from 4 star hotels to comfortable
guesthouses. Another alternative would be to rent a
small apartment for 1 month this will entail a 2 month
deposit (refundable) plus 1 month’s rent in advance.
Accommodation ranges from 350 B to over 2500 B a
day. Lists of accommodation for Bangkok Chiang Mai
and Phuket can be found in appendix b.

Can I find work in Thailand or with
ECC (Thailand) easily?
This depends on the time of year and the economic
situation in Thailand. There is still demand for English
teachers within Thailand but the money varies greatly
geographically and within language schools. ECC
(Thailand) has 50 schools around the country and
usually has approx. 10 vacancies every month. Also
see our train then teach page.
task to complete once you have been accepted onto
the course. During the course we have language
analysis input sessions to help you.

The intensive nature of this course means that any
professional or personal commitments during the
course can seriously compromise your result.

Where are the classes held?
All the classes are held at one of our training centres:
Big C Rajdamri, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket.

Is age a factor?
No, but we have found that the longer candidates
have been away from a learning environment, the
slower their rate of assimilation. Also, sometimes
older trainees have difficulties relating to younger
ones and a team environment is essential on a
course of this nature. Furthermore, we have found
older trainees can have fixed ideas about grammar,
which are not in keeping with current usage.
What is the average pass rate?

Internationally, 92.5% of candidates successfully
complete the course, 24% at Pass 'B' level, 2% at
pass 'A' level. 5% of candidates fail and 2.5%
withdraw from the course. If a candidate fails the
course and wishes to do it again, he/she will have to
pay the full course fees.
Does the course cater for people
with a lack of grammatical
knowledge?
Are the practice students Thai?
Most are, although we often have Burmese,
Japanese, Indian, Cambodian, Chinese and Eastern
European students.

Pre-Interview Task
Part 1 - Error correction
Here is a dialogue between two non-native speakers
of English in a beach restaurant on Koh Samui.
Imagine that you are their teacher and are helping
them to work on their accuracy. They are obviously
quite advanced learners and need work on choice of
words and suitability of language in a given context
as well as more obvious areas such as misuse of
tenses.
On a separate piece of paper write some comments
for them. First, make a list of their errors, then correct
them and, most importantly, explain the nature of
each error. You don't need to go into too much depth,
but your explanation should be clear enough for your
students to understand. (i.e. "wrong tense" is not
acceptable - you must explain WHY it is the wrong
tense.)
A) "Yes. I don't have a job to go back to, but I lend
$2000 from my parents for the trip so I'll have to find
something pretty quickly, ......... I hardly have any
money left."
B) "So do I, but I'm going to Australia next. I have an
uncle who is a builder in Sydney and I'd better be
able to find some work with him."
A) "Oh really! I'd love to go to Australia. I'm a surfer
and I've heard that the waves in Sydney are superb."
B) "Yes. My cousin said me."
A) " I couldn't get a visa though. The people at the
embassy in Bangkok said I'm not having enough
money."
A) "So how long have you been travelling, Paulo?"
B) "Since about six months."
A) "Mmmm... I've been away for 9 months, but I'm
quite boring with it now to be honest. I'll fly back to
Europe next week though. I've confirmed my ticket
yesterday."
B) "Must you go back to work?"
B) "Really. They're very strong about it, isn't it? I
could get a six month visa because my uncle lives
there. Nevertheless, it wasn't easy."
A) "Mmmm...I can imagine. Oh look, that's my
girlfriend calling me. She's waiting to go for dinner. I
don't have to be late. See you later."
B) " Yes, it was a pleasure talking to you, Johann."
Part 2 - Vocabulary
The following pairs of words often cause confusion
among students.
slim/thin
gone/been
infer/imply
Give an example sentence for each word that makes
the meaning clear AND explain the difference in
meaning and usage.
hinder/prevent
in the end/at the end
in time/on time
Please check our website at www.eccthai.com for changes to prices, accommodation updates, or news (Updated 01/08/06)
13
Certificate of Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (CELTA) Information Pack Copyright 2003, ECC (Thailand). All rights reserved.
Part 3 - Teaching a function
Your elementary level Thai class is going to the UK
(or USA or Australia if you prefer) on an educational
trip. The students are 18 - 20 years old. What
language items would you choose to teach them prior
to leaving Bangkok?
One item that you choose to teach them is the
language they need for ordering food and drink in a
restaurant. How would you go about this in the
classroom?
Part 4 - Word stress
Mark the main stressed syllable in the following
words:
5. indifferent
6. magnification
Examples: photograph determine
7. empathy
1. accountable
8. sympathise
2. practicality
9. engineering
3. average
4. distinguished
Part 5 - Sentence stress
In English, it is possible to change the meaning of a
sentence by stressing different words. How many
meanings can be given to the following sentence in
this way? What are the different meanings?
"He told me that Julia had borrowed the video."
Part 6 – Error correction
Correct the following sentences and explain the nature of the error:
Example:
I am always playing volleyball on the beach in the
afternoons.
This should be "I always play... " because we use the
present simple to talk about habits and routines.
I am understanding spoken Thai quite well now.
The doctor thinks the baby can walk in about three
weeks.
I've heard that song for the first time last week.

Part 7 - Usage
Compare the usage of the highlighted words in the following groups of sentences:
For example:
You don't have to go.
Could you fetch that new bottle of wine from the
kitchen, please?

Appendix C Accommodation - Bangkok
If you are training with us at our Big C Rajdamri branch in Bangkok, there are many cheap good quality guest houses,
hotels and hostels near the training centre. It is also usually possible to rent a simple one-room apartment for the
month, if you allow yourself time to organize this. Once you have found work in Thailand, finding cheap
accommodation is not difficult. In Bangkok there is, if anything, an oversupply of rented accommodation. Here the sky
train and the underground (subway) have made a big difference to transport in the areas they cover but it is still more
convenient to live near to where you will work.
You can usually find places by asking other teachers or just by walking around the area.
Accommodation while training
To help you get started, we've compiled a list of some of the accommodation available near our Big C Rajdamri
training centre. The closest cheap accommodation to Big C Rajdamri can be found in the following areas: Soi Kasem
San 1 and Rajchapraop Road. We've given you the street name in Thai to show to your taxi driver.
Address in English: Soi Kasem San 1, Rama 1 Road, Patumwan, Bangkok 10330 (Opposite the National
Stadium)
Address in Thai: ซอย เกษม สั นต์ 1 ถนนพระราม 1 ปทุมวัน กรุงเทพ ฯ 10330 (ตรงข้ ามศูนย์ กีฬาแห่ งชาติ)
There are several ways to get here from the airport. If money is no object, clearly signed limousine service counters
are located in the arrival hall on the ground floor. The approximate price from the airport to downtown is 750 baht.
Only use authorized taxis. These can be found at the clearly signed public taxi stands immediately outside the arrival
hall. Join the queue, tell the receptionist in the booth where you want to go and she will give you an invoice for the 50
baht airport surcharge which you should hand in to your driver at the end of the trip. The 'taxi meter' sign is clearly
displayed on the top of the taxi (don't get into one which doesn't have this). When your journey begins, ensure that
the driver has the meter turned on. If you use the expressway, the driver may ask you to give him the 30 – 70 baht for
the toll. More probably, he will pay himself and add the cost to the sum on the meter, together with the 50 baht airport
surcharge, at the end of your trip. The total cost to downtown should be less than 300 -500 baht. For your own safety,
check to ensure your taxi has seat belts installed when you get in and then wear them.
Soi Kasem San 1 is adjacent to the National Stadium sky train station. Leaving the station by Exit 3 brings you out at
the end of the Soi. A taxi from the airport will take you to the nearest sky train station at On Nuch.
None of the airport buses go to Siam Square, but if you take Airport Bus number 552 this will take you to On Nuch
Skytrain station. Take the Skytrain to the National stadium (change at Siam Square) and you are about a 2-minute
walk from the top end of Soi Kasem 1.
Getting to ECC Big C Rajdamri from Kasem San 1
Soi Kasem San 1 is a two to three minute walk to the Skytrain station at the National Stadium. Take the Skytrain to
Siam Square. Get off at Siam Square and walk to the opposite side of the platform. Take the Skytrain one station to
Chidlom Station. Get off the train at Chidlom and take exit number 1. Walk up to the Rachaprasong intersection and
turn right. Keep walking up the road until you come to Big C (about 3-4 minutes). You’ll find the training centre on the
fifth floor. Alternatively you can take the bus from the National Stadium to Central World (the old World Trade Centre).
The following busses are available; 73 (air- conditioned) and 204 (non air-conditioned).
All prices are subject to change. Please don’t ask us to confirm prices – confirm with the guest
houses/hotels concerned.

Appendix C Accommodation - Phuket
If you are training with us at our Phuket branch, there are many cheap good quality guest houses, hotels and hostels
near the training centre. It is also possible to rent a simple one-room apartment for the month if you allow yourself
time to organize this.
Speak to the teachers at the branch, they’ll certainly know some cheap places to stay.
Getting to the Training Centre
To help you get started, we've compiled a list of some of the accommodation available near our Phuket training
centre. Nearly all of the accommodation is within easy walking distance of the training centre.
There are a number of different ways to get to the training centre from the airport. If money is no object, clearly
signed limousine service counters are located in the arrival hall on the ground floor. The approximate price from the
airport to Phuket City is 450 baht.
There is also a minibus service into town which costs 150 Baht. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Tavorn Hotel.
The training centre is directly opposite this hotel. This can be a long journey as the minibus stops just before you get
to town and passengers are subjected to a sales pitch for hotels around Phuket. The break in the journey can last up
to an hour so, if you decide on this route, keep calm and cool because you will eventually arrive at your destination.
The other option is to take a ‘taxi meter’. When you come out of the airport you will see a sign saying ‘Taxi Meter –
100 metres’. When you see this sign, look across the car park and you’ll see the taxis about 100 meters away. These
taxis come in a variety of colours (just like in Bangkok). When you get to the taxis ask them to take you to the Tavorn
Hotel, the training centre is opposite this hotel. The price into town is the price shown on the meter plus a 100 Baht
airport surcharge. Check that the driver switches the meter on! For your own safety, check to ensure your taxi has
seat belts installed when you get in and then wear them.
As you leave the airport, you will very probably be besieged by people offering you unauthorized taxis. No matter how
pleasant or persistent they are, don't be tempted to use these! At the very least you will end up paying a great deal
more than you should and much worse things have been known to happen.
Accommodation
We have compiled a list of accommodation around town. The places here are in easy walking distance (2-10
minutes) of the training centre. The prices outlined here are subject to change. Please confirm prices with the
hotels concerned not with us. You may be able to obtain better deals by negotiating the price. Prices are
sometimes lower during the low season (May-October).

Appendix C Accommodation – Chiang Mai
If you are training with us at our Chiang Mai teacher training centre, there are many cheap good quality
guest houses, hotels and hostels near the training centre. It is also possible to rent a simple one-room
apartment for the month if you allow yourself time to organize this.
Speak to the teachers at the centre, they'll certainly know some cheap places to stay.
Getting to the Training Centre
To help you get started, we've compiled a list of some of the accommodation available near our Chiang Mai
centre. A lot of the accommodation is within easy walking distance of the branch but some of is located in
the town centre. The address of the training centre is here in English and Thai:
ECC Chiang Mai, 15/73 Huey Kaew Road, Suthep, Muang, Chiang Mai 50200
ECC เชียงใหม่ 15/73 ถ. ห้วยแก้ว ต. สุ เทพ อ. เมือง จ. เชี ยงใหม่ 50200
There are a number of different ways to get to the training centre from the airport. Limousine service
counters are located outside the arrival hall on the left. The approximate price from the airport to the
training centre is 120 Baht.
The other option is to take a 'taxi meter'. These taxis can be found by turning right outside the arrival hall
and going out of the terminal building. There is a desk clearly marked ‘taxi meter’. Tell them where you are
going and they will ask for the 50 Baht airport surcharge there and then. When you have paid that, you will
be directed to the taxis (usually blue and yellow). Flag fall is 40 baht (which gets you 2 kilometers) and then
the price rises in 2 Baht increments. To get to the school will cost about 120 Baht total.
If you know where you are going to be staying, you could arrange for an airport pick-up to your hotel/guest
house. This is usually free of charge!
As you leave the airport, you will very probably be approached by people offering you unauthorized taxis.
No matter how pleasant or persistent they are, don't be tempted to use these! At the very least you will end
up paying a great deal more than you should and much worse things have been known to happen.
If you arrive by train, your transportation options are a ‘taxi meter’ (same as above but no airport
surcharge), a tuk-tuk or a songthaew (truck with benches for seats). With both the tuk-tuk and the
songthaew you will need to negotiate the price of the journey. The trip to the training centre from the train
station will cost between 150-200 Baht depending on your negotiation skills!
If you arrive by bus, you have the same options as arriving by train. A negotiated price in a tuk-tuk or
songthaew could cost between 180-250 Baht.
Both the train and bus stations are some way from the training centre.
Accommodation
We have compiled a list of accommodation around town. Some of the places here are in easy walking
distance (5-15 minutes) of the training centre, while others are located in the city centre. A songthaew on
Huey Kaew Road (where the training centre is located) to ECC should cost no more than 15-20 Baht. The
choice is yours but it is probably advisable to be as near to the training centre as possible. The prices
outlined here are subject to change. Please confirm prices with the hotels concerned, not with us.
You may be able to obtain better deals by negotiating the price. Prices are sometimes lower during the offpeak season (16th April-31st October).
Please check our website at www.eccthai.com for changes to prices, accommodation updates, or news (Updated 01/08/06)

Integrated here means that both assessed components contribute to the overall grade
The two components of assessment
Component One: Planning and teaching
In this component, candidates are required to practice teach for a total of six assessed hours, working with adult
learners at a minimum of two levels in classes of the required size.
By the end of the six hours of assessed teaching practice, candidates should have demonstrated successful
achievement of all the teaching practice assessment criteria.
Component Two: Classroom-related written assignments
This component consists of four written assignments:

One assignment focuses on adult learners and learning contexts

One assignment focuses on an aspect of the language system of English

One assignment focuses on an aspect of language skills

One assignment requires reflection on classroom teaching and the identification of action points
The centre is responsible for designing the written assignments, which should each be between 750 and 1,000
words. The assignments are internally assessed and externally moderated. Two assignments may be conflated into
one larger assignment provided that all the assessment criteria are met.
Certificate grades
The Certificate will be awarded to candidates who meet the course requirements and whose performance meets, or
exceeds, the criteria in both assessment components. Candidates are ineligible for the award in cases where
dishonesty or plagiarism is brought to the attention of Cambridge ESOL teaching awards.
A Pass is awarded to candidates whose performance overall in the teaching practice and in the written assignments
meets the specified criteria.
They will continue to need guidance to help them to develop and broaden their range of skills as teachers in post.
A Pass (Grade B) is awarded to candidates whose performance in the written assignments meets the specified
criteria and who have demonstrated in their teaching practice a level of achievement significantly higher than that
required to meet pass-level criteria in relation to:

demonstration of the criteria for teaching skills and professionalism
They will continue to need some guidance to help them to develop and broaden their range of skills as teachers in
post.
A Pass (Grade A) is awarded to candidates whose performance in the written assignments meets the specified
criteria and who have demonstrated in their teaching practice a level of ability and achievement and a level of
awareness significantly higher than that required to meet pass-level criteria in relation to:

planning for effective teaching

teaching skills and professionalism
They will benefit from further guidance in post but will be able to work independently.
Candidates who fail to meet criteria in any or all assessed components will receive a Fail.
