PPE is available in the form of gloves and eye ware 2. Signage to explain correct procedure (see attached form) to follow when handling liquid nitrogen 3. 3. Wash affected area with cold water, no rubbing. Contact Health services ext 3161 and fill in an Injury Report form 1. Don PPE and try to contain the spill with paper towels. Keep the area clear of traffic and ensure that the area is well ventilated. Given the risks identified, specify the Health & Safety training provided to staff and/or students undertaking this activity: The liquid nitrogen dewar is well sign posted and only post graduate students or lecturers use the liquid nitrogen after they have had the procedure explained by the Biochemistry Technician – Connie Wishart______see attached note for procedure ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Given the risks identified, provide details of any Health and Safety manuals provided to staff and /or students undertaking this activity: __LIQUID NITROGEN DECANTING PROCEDURE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING TO BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHEN WORKING WITH THE LIQUID NITROGEN – GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION 1. Put gloves and eye protection on. 2. Wheel the liquid nitrogen cylinder into an accessible position 3. Remove the red covering lid. 4. Using the stainless steel ladle, carefully insert it into the container and spoon small amounts out into the stainless steel dish mounted in the polystyrene or into the stainless steel vacuum flask. DO NOT FASTEN THE LID! 5. Replace the red covering lid when finished. FIRST AID SKIN CONTACT – WASH WITH COLD WATER FOR 10-15 MINUTES, WITHOUT RUBBING. DO NOT APPLY HEAT OR HOT WATER. APPLY A CLEAN DRY DRESSING AND CONTACT HEALTH SERVICES EXT 3161 AND CONNIE WISHART EXT 5865 COMPLETE AN INJURY REPORT FORM ______________________________________________________________________________________________________
